Absolutely guessing here, but I would think that people moving in 1st are already fairly settled somewhere and less inclined to take a spot offered in September or October than families at other grade levels. |
Tubman will still be in the swing space at 800 Euclid for the next school year and DCPS does not provide transportation. Tubman is also looking like it will lose ~12 positions in budget cuts due to under enrollment. People talking about what that might mean in coming years in this thread: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1261382.page I'd stick with John Francis at least through the next year. |
I bet it moves quickly. There are a bunch of Hardy 8th graders going to privates and now SWW. |
No. |
L-T's 1st grade is so big that they're adding a 4th classroom for 2nd next year. I would say it is very likely that they take a few additional 2nd graders (in addition to any initial matches that turn down slots) to fill the classes to 20. So this particular year, I'd say very good odds. |
Second the love for Thomson. Amazing staff and school leadership. If you can make the before care thing work, highly recommend. |
Your kid is not in the right track. Plenty of challenge in the spanish track if you are higher performing. No surprises about Chinese. What did you expect in DC. All the chinese are in the burbs. Now spanish, tons of spanish kids and native families. That’s the difference. |
As a family who was offered one of those second grade spots last year: it's this. If it has been PK, K, or maybe 1st, we would have done it. A month of second is a big deal for a 7 yr old, they would have fought us on it and if it wasn't a good fit we would have felt extra bad about taking them from their current school. This year we got into our first choice school for 3rd (not Inspired, though we ranked it again) and I'm so glad we didn't go through that upheaval last year. |
We moved our son into 1st at Inspired well into September. We do not regret it. They may possibly prefer parents who have a STRONG preference for ITDS as we did. |
My child is going into first grade. He's 8 on the waitlist for Shepherd, 10 for Lafayette, Bancroft and Murch, and 7 for Hearst. What is the likelihood of getting into any of these prior to the start of school? |
What they do is they don't move their list until late in the summer, so people who aren't that into it might have gotten off the list by then. |
The only one I feel confident commenting on is Bancroft. Your kid will not get in there. |

No sibling preference Matched LAMB Kid is currently at a bilingual Montessori 4 blocks from our home, has been there for a year. Lamb is about 10 minute drive north from where we are in Columbia heights so will be a half hour X2 commitment daily. We admittedly did about a weeks worth of research before doing the DC lottery so we don't know all that much about lamb. Just looking to hear thoughts on Lamb. Thanks |
Shepherd had 6 lottery first grade seats for 24-25 and took 0 kids off the waitlist. However, a K classroom was added this year, so there might be more spots in first for next year. But I doubt you will know by the start of school because they will probably hold spots for by-right kids who move into the neighborhood. |
Too bad you didn’t do any research, because if you matched for LAMB then you had a pretty good lottery number and could have gotten in anywhere. |
