So based on these posts an applicant needed around a 3.7 or higher UW to get an acceptance

Three years ago, my DS had a 3.85 UW and a 1480 SAT and was deferred, then waitlisted at JMU.

My kid W school got in 4.65 WGPA and 10 AP classes to honors.

She was not as excited as should be as got rejected UNC today too

Congratulations, PP. Impressive stats, too!

Maybe to be a likely acceptance but definitely not to be accepted. My kid 3.6W 1400 SATs got accepted. His friends with 3.8W and 3.9W but under 1300 SATs also got in.

I think some VA publics do, including UVA and WM. It’s disappointing when publics prioritize higher OOS tuition over raising the academic caliber of the student body. But I’m not convinced that’s always the case when students with lower grades or SATs get accepted over others that are more competitive on those two metrics. We’re not privy to other equally important parts of the application.

+1
Where is the evidence that kids with “lesser stats” are being accepted from OOS? Could that just be sour grapes talking?

Reading the anecdotes from parents stating their kids' stats and whether they were accepted.

Anecdotes aren’t data! No doubt some are lying, and those who aren’t make up a tiny, tiny fraction of all applicants. OOS vs in-state stats aren’t published anywhere. I think those assuming OOS applicants have lower stats are trying to make themselves feel better, as the PP said. Sour grapes syndrome.

I don't think ALL students accepted from OOS have low stats. And I don't think all low stats OOS anecdotes are lies. I do think, however, ALL students from OOS should have the highest stats to be admitted, prioritizing opportunities for in-state students who need/really really want the school and/or its in-state tuition. If the school wants/needs the higher tuition from OOS students, then set-aside 20% of seats for OOS students with stats above the overall average for admitted students.

My W school kid had similar stats and got into the HC. She also got rejected from her first choice (UMD). I hope when the sting of rejection fades she’ll realize what a great option JMU is, especially with the HC. In many ways it’s a better choice IMO.

JMU was a safety for DS, but DS was deferred w/ a 3.74 UW GPA

Accepted into Penn State engineering.

That's crazy. Congrats to your son!

Bump. Any more stats?

Would also like to know. Any waitlisted?

Is anyone else confused by all of these Penn State admits being rejected by JMU? Is that yield protection?

Penn State is #63 with a 54% admit rate. JMU is #148 with a 76% admit rate.

Realistically Penn State's acceptance rate for engineering with a fall start at University Park is much lower than the schools overall 54% acceptance rate. Almost nobody from my kid's school gets denied from Penn State, they just get admitted to a branch campus, even for engineering. Penn State's is ranked 20 for engineering, so I have a hard time believing admitted to Penn States main campus for engineering and waitlisted or deferred from JMU.
