My kid was/is opposed to the pouches; but haven't heard any complaints from them since week 1.
They acknowledged more students were participating in class discussions and are now talking instead of being on their phones during work time, which is annoying for my kid because she's trying to do her work. But again, she hasn't complained about it since early on. Believe me, she would complain vociferously if it were a problem.

She's not complaining because no one is using them or enforcing it anymore. So there's nothing to complain about!

Exactly - that was my point for the anti-cell phone ban troll who has no clue about anything and just wants to bash the policy by illogically asserting it has worsened the problem.

I think you read this wrong. The student isn't complaining anymore because no one is using the pouches and no one is enforcing the pouch rules anymore. Hence nothing to complain about. Schools just quietly are not enforcing.

Do you have a student at a school using pouches? I do, and they are being used, and it’s going fine.

yes I have a student at a pouch school, and this isn't our experience. Most kids are not using them, and it's still going fine. Cell phones are not that big of a problem.

Actually I think you're talking about yourself. Cell phones are not that big of a problem yet you are OBSESSED with banning them for all kids. Why are you so triggered by other people's kids having cell phones? Just take your own kid's phone away and leave others to do what they will with their kids.

DP. I realize this is difficult for anti-cell-phone-banners to understand, but it isn't about MY kid's inappropriate use of phones in the classroom. It's about ANY kid(s) using their cell phone during class and disrupting class (either by distraction or by interruption because teacher has to stop to tell kid to put away -- several times to one or to multiple kids), INTERFERING WITH OTHER students' learning.

Primarily, it's about OTHERS (which is why it's so hard for people like you to understand or accept). Secondarily, it is about the kid using their phone and not paying attention in class and their education.

No, it is you who do not understand. It is not about distraction in class. We already have away for instruction in all APS schools.

No. You are blind to the reality. It IS about distraction in class. Maybe it's about other things for some people, too - like minimizing amount of time students spend on social media and exposure to cyber-bullying and whatever. But the crux of it is about learning and the learning environment. Just having "away for instruction" rule in and of itself does not mean that's what's happening.

I want no phones during class and between classes. I'd prefer no/limited screens during lunch but realize some students may actually want to work on school work during that time; and I am more than happy to accommodate phones at lunch with an absolute ban during and between classes - including teachers refraining from using apps or things that are not available on the school-issued device AND not requiring things to be turned in in a way that ultimately leads students to resort to using their phones to do it (such as "notes" which some students prefer to take by hand, but teachers require to be submitted electronically and is not easily done so unless you take your notes electronically).

Weird take to go back to doing notes by hand. This isn't the 1980s.

Both of my children prefer it. Both came to their preference on their own.
Studies have demonstrated it is also more effective for learning/retention.
It's less distracting than the clickety clack of keys when students take notes on their laptops during class - which may lead to students merely taking dictation rather than really listening and determining what is important to make notes about, btw.

That's fine that your two kids prefer it, mandating all do it is weird. Especially since they don't really even learn cursive.

Nowhere did I mandate that all kids must take notes by hand. I was saying that teachers need to assign and collect assignments in ways that are not complicated so that students take photos of their handwritten notes on their phone and then send those photos/upload those photos to Canvas. The assignment is for students to take notes and all the teacher is doing is checking that the student did it. The teacher can do that by looking at paper and does not have to require it be submitted via Canvas. Otherwise, the teacher is essentially mandating that students take notes digitally - or retype their handwritten notes. Students should be able to take notes however they prefer. It's not like they're submitting a research paper or even an essay for grading. Just notes for checking the box.

BTW, learning cursive is irrelevant to hand note-taking. My older child doesn't use cursive, just prints - by hand. My younger child uses cursive.
