| Wow, Simone has a boot on for the prime time show interview. |
She re injured it in warm ups for the floor, still did all that tumbling on it, and had a massive ice pack on the back of it by the time all the final scores were in. And that's after competing on it injured for the past few days. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if something got torn. |
+ 1 million |
+1 Sunni Lee is such a graceful gymnast. Love to watch her!! |
I hope Simone gets to sit on a beach somewhere with a mai tai and her husband for a few days after all this, before the tour begins. She deserves it! |
Sounds like they are literally heading straight out on tour. In any case her DH is already in pre-season and had to get special permission to got to Paris to see her compete as it stands -- no way is he going to be able to take a few days off for a vacation right now. Their schedule at the moment is pretty insane and unlikely to let up until spring. Curious if Simone will do a full competition schedule next year. Nationals is in late spring and world's is in october. She should be able to rehab the leg during tour and get real time off this winter but will need to be in the gym pretty regularly by march if she wants to qualify and then go to nationals. She's been very noncommittal about her future and is in a pretty big juncture in terms of her career -- I am not sure there is a ton left for her to accomplish in non-Olympic meets and there is a strong argument in favor of taking at least a full year off and maybe two even if she wants to come back at 21 for the LA Olympics because of her age and risk of injury. Like not stop training altogether but not compete. I am really interested in what she'll do. |
That’s age 31 for LA, PP! I would be gobsmacked if she doesn’t take next season off. |
Oops typo! Thanks for catching. To me if she doesn't take next season off it's an indication she's about to retire -- one last season as a farewell tour and then she goes and has a couple babies and runs her gym and maybe takes a position with USGA or similar. She could also do the farewell tour in 2026 but by 2027 it's full-on Olympic pre-season and I would expect her to make a run for LA. Happy for her no matter what she decides but just very curious to see what her next moves are. |
agree, so hard to watch |
I wonder how much NBC is spending to have so many people in Paris for this long?? I work in accounting and keep imagining the expense reports for all these people

Is anyone watching artistic swimming? They used to be called synchronized swimming. When did the name change?
They're so fun! |
Not just NBC -- lots of news orgs send at least one correspondent to cover the games. Every time I hear a report from the Olympics on the radio or on local news I think about all the people who got a sweet 2 week stay in Paris out of this and I'm happy for them. But regarding NBC -- they build out so much infrastructure for the Olympics that you can't look at the costs like you would a normal business trip. The Olympics is one of their biggest revenue generators and the ads they sell during the primetime coverage are rivaled only by Super Bowl ads in terms of cost. So they can rent out an entire hotel for staff and pay for all the steak frite the army of NBC folks who have essentially moved to France for the month of July can eat and it's still a highly profitable endeavor for them. The LA games are going to be especially profitable for them because it will be so much cheaper for them to set up camp there -- they already have plenty of studios and corporate apartments and lots of their sports reporters are already based out of LA. They must have been thrilled when LA got selected even if the people who work there probably enjoy the boondoggles in Paris and London and Sydney quite a bit more. |
| Bumping this because breakdancing happened. I was open to it but wow I cringed the whole time. What are the odds they pull it before the next Olympics? |
It’s already been determined that break dancing will not be in the next Olympics. Keep up. |
| Maybe it's already been mentioned, but wow, there are so many truly beautiful athletes competing. Just watched Anna Hall in the pentathlon. She's stunning! |
