Basically the same as the Ohio district I saw that starts September 6 and has a last day of June 6.

Yes, this really isn’t hard. But there isn’t much chance that the leadership at FCPS can handle scheduling, or anything, effectively.

Time for school choice vouchers. Since my taxes are going to pay for education, I would prefer that they are used effectively. Fairfax County does a lot well, fire, police, trash collection, but schools they have been going down hill for 20 years.

Trash collection is private, not a county service, fyi

Actually, there is a good bit of Fairfax that does have trash collection by the county. Sadly, my neighborhood does not.

And when your kids are out of school and your taxes still go towards schools, will you even care? Probably not.

Heck yeah.

Good schools with happy parents = $$$$ for our property value.

Certainly will care. Schools drive property values and I want the next generation to be employable and paying into the social security for the next 30-35 years.

Okay, Republican troll.

There’s no perfect balancing of these but it seems an earnest effort was made to broadly solicit input.

Just because your personal preferences aren’t reflected in the end result doesn’t mean they weren’t considered… they just also considered others’ preferences as well. The most important thing is making the calendar decisions with enough lead time everyone can plan accordingly. Stop acting like there is a “right answer” to school calendar development and that if you just advocate hard enough you’ll convince people to see things your way and adopt your preferences.

But that is exactly what happened last year. Religious groups advocated HARD for their days off in the calendar. They put money and time in and got what they wanted.

Advocating for our preferences is precisely what we should do.

But that is the thing. You will not get the same preference from every parent in Fairfax County. That is why they shouldn’t survey parents. So you can advocate all you want but that doesn’t mean other parents aren’t advocating for something different. The calendar will not please everyone.

If that is the case and FCpS is so bad, why have property values skyrocketed? My house I purchased 4 years ago is worth almost 200,000 dollars more.

That’s great, glad you prospering. With TJ becoming a lottery school, a dysfunctional school board, and a Superintendent in way over her head the decline is only going to accelerate. FCPS will still live off of its former reputation for a few more years.

I am sorry. I don’t see housing prices going down in the next 10 years.

I truly doubt you’ll continue to follow SB decisions, overcrowding concerns, SAT trends, etc….but you can continue to believe you will. When your kids go off to college and move on, FCPS will be your last concern.

This. You will never find consensus even within the different stakeholders. The school board is taking into account what the Majority want regarding start time and winter break as seen in the survey results. Everyone should stop whining and deal with it.

+1. I suppose an anonymous message board is the perfect place to whine, but it's still just whining.

Unfortunately, no one can, it is simply unexplainable for any rational reason. Perhaps the Superintendent can in one of her emails.

Hate it. Aug 28 or last week of august makes more sense.

Hope the A/c works this year I am daughter school. Didn’t last year. Aug 21 is too hot when the building are not cooled right. I am sure Mclean high schools a/c is bumping though!

Poor choice for your “bumping” example… at McLean only the bathrooms got any significant remediation this year. Probably at least a dozen other FCPS HS whose HVAC has seen attention more recently and is in better shape than McLean’s.

Unclear why any informed person would label this as “ridiculously early”. Nationwide I think this is about a median start date. Have several relatives around the country whose kids are starting on the 14th.
