Charters: What covid precautions has your school announced for the upcoming year?

I guess people aren’t upset enough to take a stand and take the heat. The silent majority has only themselves to blame. So much for following the science.

Are masks required for the meet your teacher night or for students going returning to school?

Confirmed. I just clarified with an ITDS teacher that all students are required to wear masks. We need to start a petition to at least make it optional. Or go to a different school, which sounds a million times nicer at this point.

ITDS families should all disenroll and enroll in their IB school this week.

I'd love to see all of these hysterical anti-maskers do just that! Sadly not a single one will.

You realize that when removed from institutional and social pressure, the vast majority of people are not wearing masks now. Right?

Just endless drama from your lot.

So?

I also realize that most people are willing to abide by certain social contracts, like following rules the school sets. I didn’t see one person putting up a fuss at open house, despite the hysterics here. People on dcum are prone to such dramatics but irl most people aren’t so absurd.

All the kids at IT should be required to wear helmets in the classroom. It doesn't bother anyone and it would increase safety,

Sure! Why not?

my point is that there is a large silent majority that would happily unmask - and maybe is also very dissatisfied about it - but they don’t say anything because most people don’t want to put themselves at risk. The accusations about masks are absolutely toxic and I don’t blame parents not willing to speak up. That’s not a “social contract” - it’s repression.

THIS. And parents who are all about “speaking truth to power” are silent on this nonsense.

Most People don’t care either way. The loud minority is here on DCUM.

It's so hard for me to accept that people wouldn't feel strongly about something like this. Learning other languages, social cues, story times behind a mask for a developing child. You'd have to feel very strongly about either this perspective or a deadly pandemic where all precautions are necessary. Can you imagine asking a school precovid to mask all their students down to age 3 to conduct an innocuous research study? Parents would go nuts.

The world has changed and some of you really can't accept that.

My family has never had covid and I'd like to keep it that way. I am happy our charter will continue to mask.

I also can't believe that people in DC are so myopic. NOBODY (outside of a few other nutjob districts/cities) is masking their kids. Look around the WORLD - NOBODY! So why are DC parents so complacent/accepting/compliant? Odd.

I was at the beach, I observed maybe four people with masks, one was a family member from DC.

PP. I also have not had covid and would like to keep it that way. And I'm one of the very few who still wears masks at work. But my child's education is different. And you do clearly feel strongly about it. That was my point. And if you feel so strongly about it, you should want a world that masks for ever and everywhere. Too bad the grocery store and public transportation is mask optional unlike our charter. Covid is never going away. Keep your child in a mask through college. Good luck to you and yours never getting it!!!

Does your kid have a learning disability?

If your school makes masks optional, your kids are free to wear them.

DC people think they are the only ones following the science and the only non-selfish morally superior people on the planet. Oh, and they don't want to be mistaken for a Trump supporter.

Anti-masker? This isn't 2020 anymore. The vast majority of people aren't wearing masks, so get with the program.

Some MV parents started a petition but many people are too afraid to sign it because there are a few vehement pro maskers that will come after them.

Come after them and do what?

The admin should put it to a vote. An in-person vote.

Be obnoxious. Who knows. But they should do a vote. At least most other schools did that?

This absolutely should not be put to a vote. How ridiculous. School leaders shouldn't run and make operational decisions based on parent surveys. Leaders need to follow best practices and local public health guidelines and make a decision, even if it angers some people.

Isn’t that what they did? Made a decision, even if it made some parents angry.

You forgot the "follow best practices and local public health guidelines" part.

The vast majority of people are not wearing masks now at all, regardless of any institutional or social pressure.
