Just need to share.

My DS son is a rising senior.

He got a 31 on his 1st ACT (97th % nationally), 1950 on his first SAT (89% nationally).

Everything I am reading says he should take it again- that he could do better the 2nd time, that schools super score, that they will only look at the best score.

DS was scheduled to take the 2nd SAT yesterday and his 2nd ACT next week. He woke up yesterday and said "I'm done with the test. I did my best, and I don't want to take it again. Either I am good enough, or I am not."

At first, I was mad and thinking he was slacking, but after a few hours of thinking it over, I liked where he was coming from. If he scores higher, he may end up in a place that is a reach for him and struggle. I apologized for sending him the message that his awesome scores were not good enough.

He has decided to apply to school that are top rated, but not ivy league or super reaches.

I couldn't be prouder and I want to share with ya'll that this feels good.

He got into the magnet for high school, yet he chose to stay at his home school. He did great. Sometimes, as Mary Poppins says, "Enough is a good as a feast."

I am one proud mom today.

Awesome. Sounds like he will do well in life especially with a supportive and understanding parent rather than a pushy helicopter crazy. If he is meant for more, more will come naturally, not unnaturally. Best of luck!

Good for him for making an adult decision!

I"m a big believer in letting the kids be the driver in their education and related decisions in high school. My DS did not take the hardest courses and only took the SATs/ACTs once. He just finished his first year of college and he's very happy. Me too! Good for you, OP!

I think the kid was right and kudos to you for going along with him and not insisting he retake them.

My DC did 200 points worse the second time! So even if he had gone to Blair or wherever to take them yesterday, you might still be in the same place scorewise, just more stressed out.

This. Better to sit back and collect the somewhat easy As than suffer and slave for the hard to earn, barely Cs.

A happy kid wherever is better than an unhappy kid at Yale.

OP here. Thanks for the kind words. It's a banner day! 7 responses, and not one person was snarky.

I feel like the muppets should break out in song or something.

You sound like a great mom, and he's lucky to have you.
Keep it up and he'll do great in life!
