Could DC's next mayor be white?

Personally I think not. I think this is just HuffPo trying to get page views, but it is interesting to see the huge demographic shift in the city. Eventually DC will become San Francisco East.

Reducing DC politics to a simplistic contest between black and white seems to be a favorite activity of the media. It is a tactic that is certain to generate clicks, so I guess it is probably a money-maker for the Huff Post (who aggregated it from the Washington Post which should probably stick to its core activity of test preparation). Neither the District's white community nor its black community are monolithic. Neither will line up solely along racial lines. The idea that Evans and Wells would appeal to the same audience simply because of their skin color is laughable. That's like saying Bowser and Barry would attract the same voters because of their skin color. There might be a few idiots who would do it, but not many.

You know who LOVES Bowser? Tony Kornheiser. He lives in her ward and raves about her all the time on his show. Just a little sidebar.

I live in her ward as well, though I suspect Kornheiser and I live on different sides of Rock Creek Park. I would say that Bowser and Evans have more in common than Wells and Evans.

Remember that David Clarke was elected Council Chair, and David Catania and Phil Mendelson have also won citywide (although Catania, in a non-majority party seat, is a special case). I'm white, and might consider Wells, but Evans is unlikely to ever get my vote. Seems like Muriel is being taken more and more seriously, though.

I think it would be possible if there were two competitive Black candidates and one White candidate who would benefit from a divided electorate. I'm thinking back to mayoral race in "The Wire" where this was a plot line. People say that the White mayor (Tommy Carcetti) was based on O'Malley. Is this how O'Malley got elected mayor of Baltimore? Does anyone know?

I am Black and Muriel will never receive my vote. I would look at Catania, but he won't run. I think Catania cares about fiscal responsibilty and social issues. I don't know much about Wells, but I guess I will have to find out. Evans is a definite no-go for my vote. If you are not a developer or a business, I doubt he has much use for you.

Please tell us why. Also don't you want more business to come to the District? That's been Evans and Kwame Brown's role and I support that.

Demographic shifts aren't enough. I do not think that voters will always vote based on race, but any white candidate needs to prove that he understands and empathizes with the distressed black neighborhoods in DC. And while a black candidate might get the benefit of the doubt, a white candidate is going to have to prove it by spending time in those neighborhoods. Lots and lots of time. When a white candidate is willing to do more than obligatory campaign event stops, maybe a white candidate will have a chance.

4 generation washingtonian i would never vote for a white candiate period. Being born and raised in the housing projects and low income neighborhoods of the District and being a young black male that actually paids attention to politics i feel cheated by my own people. Im fairly young (23) and I helped vote out the only DC mayor I never heard of being corrupt. It hurts me to my heart in way you white people who just moved to DC in your overpriced condos will ever understand. I remember not being able to pay my senior fees because my job with Juma Ventures at the National's Ballpark Stadium(which was built after the government torn down a black neighborhood) didnt pay me after a month and a half. It was Kwame Brown who wrote me a check for 400 dollars only after Brown campaign threated the company with a lawsuits did i get my money. At my graduation Vincent Gray gave the final speech(before he was mayor). Im not defending them neither if I believe the should be thrown in dc jail the same way you throw us young latinos and blacks in for staring back at the police wrong. But voting for a white person it out of the question so YES IT DOES MATTER AND THE DC GOVERNMENT KNOWS THIS that why they strongarmed the seat. Are you crazy after my neigborhood(Temple Court/The Market) was torn down the built a parking lot and condos for white people after the neigborhood i moved to after that was turned into Adams Morgan. I seen more white police in DC in the last tens years than I do in PG and none of them are from anywhere near here. DC is becoming more openly racist than Virigina.
