An Appeal to Black Voters!

Anonymous
Since President Obama came out in defense of gay marriage I've been hearing/reading that some black voters are reconsidering their voting support for him in November. This would be one big JACK ASS of a decision. DON'T GET IT TWISTED -- while you may not see eye-to-eye with the president on this issue, there is no doubt that his platform issues are more in-line with our views than the alternative. We are not a monolithic voting bloc and this will not be a "single-issue" election. For example, see my post from last year @ http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/205172.page -- Bottomline: If you have religious or other reservations about gay marriage, then, by all means, stand your ground. But don't cut off your nose to spite your face! The President knows what he's doing, and you know it. DON'T GET IT TWISTED!

Forward,
Your Brother

And if you have reservations about gay marriage, rethink them. They're just making you look mean.

I will vote when we have a government for the people by the people!
Screw Mitt and Obama!

Why do you have to label everything that involves black people?

We're not monolithic and yet "there is no doubt that his platform issues are more in-line with our views than the alternative?"

Sir, will you also be posting an appeal to religious white voters and Latino voters who are thinking of not voting for Obama because he supports same-sex marriage?

Are you even black? Because if you were, I'd suspect you know that there are more appropriate and effective message boards you could post on if you really wanted to try to change minds. Also, I think you'd know that this discussion *is* happening on majority-black forums, but changing the minds of the uber-religious takes more than "don't get it twisted, listen to your brotha, vote Obeezy!"

Also, the super religious black people I know who are extreme enough to vote for someone else based on this single issue would be turned off by your use of "jack ass." Just sayin. If you care about getting the message out, care about how you send the message.

OP here. I generally agree. And, we are certainly not mean people. Thanks.

You don't know me to suggest this. I (we) am free to post however I wish. Thanks.

They make up 30% of the MD electorate. Your cause is doomed.

And they all vote exactly the same way on the issue? 100% of black voters vote against gay marriage? And they are the sole reason a same-sex marriage ban would pass?

Honestly, I am for same-sex marriage and am actually LGBT myself, but if I weren't, some same-sex marriage supporters are so damn off-putting that it would turn me off and cause me to not care.

I posted this message EXACTLY the way I wanted and to whom I wanted it to reach.

I am fully aware of "majority black" virtual communities -- however, you might be surprised that we sometimes expand our horizons beyond those venues. IMO, your suggestion implies that you have a narrow-minded view of black people.

blacks arent flocking to republicans as a result of this so there is really no worry.

we all dont think alike nor do all of us agree 100% with obama or the democrat party (i include myself in that camp. not in regards to gay marriage though) so this will pass and the folks upset today will be there in november voting for obama i imagine.

worse case, they dont vote at all. best case, they just arent jumping out there all into obama and getting folks excited about it but they will still vote for him in november

Speaking of narrow-minded, are you going to address how you state "we're" not monolithic and yet you're also sure the Democratic platform is more in line with "our" views?

Of course blacks won't vote for republicans. But they'll never vote for gay marriage.

So black people are a monolith and vote as one? Please show me statistics that show that 100% of black people vote against gay marriage.
