What's a good non-pukey prenatal vitamin?

Anonymous
I've tried a couple of different natural vitamins from wholefoods - but they make me want to puke. Just opening the bottle makes me nauseated that I skip it on most days. Someone told me to take a children's chewable instead, but I'm afraid it doesn't have enough folic acid. Can anyone recommend a good prenatal vitamin?

Some days when I'm feeling especially pukey I take a double dose of my son's gummi vitamins, plus a couple of folic acid pills with them--they're so small and don't have any odor that they don't make me any more nauseated than I already am.

I tried a few different kinds from all-natural and expensive to GNC formulas, and honestly the ones I ended up with are the CVS brand. No smell, not too big to swallow, easy on the stomach, and cheap.

My OBs (2 pregnancies in 2 different states) both recommended Flintstones, one in the morning and one at night. I still take them now while nursing.

I feel your pain! I felt like my prenatal vitamins were the source of all my "morning" sickness which turned into feeling pukey morning, noon, and night! My best suggestion is to ask your OB for a couple of sample packs of prenatal vitamins. They should have tons they are willing to share. For me size was just as imporant as the lingering taste and smell of the vitamin and the only one I was ever able to keep down without a serious battle is the "Duet-DHA" pack of vitamins. It contains two pills (one gell one caplet) which are both coated and have zero smell or taste. Before I found these, the over the counter CVS brand prenatal vitamins were the most tolerable.

Good luck!!!

I actually stuck with the CVS brand folic acid for most of the pregnancy. My OB said that folic acid was fine, but the prenatals were a better bet so she gave me a few samples.

Ask your doc for a few sample packs. I ended up going with the CVS brand. They smelled, but I just popped them in my mouth quickly then I didn't allow myself to take a wif.
Plus, they didn't constipate me either...what a relief.

I second gummi vitamins. I get them at whole foods.

I like the Target brand prenatals. I tried the Whole Foods ones and they not only smelled bad, but were hard to swallow.

Trader Joe's has some adult chewable vitamins that taste pretty good. If you take 2, then you get 800 mcg of folic acid.

Thanks for all the responses - I'll have to check out the CVS, Target and the gummie vitamines.

I used the CVS brand initially and they made me VERY nauseous...burping up all the time. Gross.

My OB put me on prescription PrimaCare One. I LOVE it! No nausea, lots of DHA and stool softener, and the pill even has a sweet vanilla coating that actually tastest GOOD! Highly recommended! Plus, no vitamin - A which is bad for baby!

I second the primacare recommendation.

Duet DHA is the best. There is a second pill (forget what it's called) that helps the nausea.

I took the Whole Foods generic brand without problems, but got the tip to take them at night, last thing. That way I slept through any stomach upset. In the morning on an empty stomach is rough on your system. Give nighttime a try!

My OB gave me an Rx for Select OB (I think that's what they're called?).

It's a chewable prenatal. I really liked them.
