G'town Prep scholarships

Does Georgetown Prep have merit based scholarships or athletic scholarships? Thanks?

I'm not sure but hopefully they do!, but I know Prep has the reputation to be a school for rich kids! If you were accepted into Prep you definitely want to go through every option to put your child into their school because of the difficulty of getting into the school.

They have neither athletic or academic scholarships. This isn't college, so using collge terms is going to confuse the situation.

What they have is a pot of Financial Aid money set aside for appicants and current students. They distribute that money to boys that have a financial need and who apply for the aid.

They then distribute it. Once the money is gone it is gone.

And your son's chance of dipping into that pot increase substantially if he happens to be a star athlete.

or a star student. Or maybe a minority. The admissions committee/office gets pressure from all the various factions on the campus. They try to balance all the needs.

With 125 boys in a class, GP doesn't have to chase individual athletes quite so hard as they might have in the past when classes were smaller.

Such an ignorant comment.

Prep has strict academic standards. If a student belongs there and requires financial aid, the committee does everything in its power to accommodate the family.

Of the 8 boys that got admitted to Prep from DS class, 5 (including DS) turned them down. Of the 3 that are going, 1 is a mediocre student that happens to be a legacy and the other two are bottom of the class but the parents are well-connected and quite wealthy. So you can really stop beating the "academic standards" drum for we all know that Prep has been sitting on its laurels and has coasted for the past several years.

Oh, and I am not 20:03, but I do totally agree with her/him.

Well, I'm not 20:11 but I agree with him/her. I work at one of these schools so don't kid yourself that kids get in on academics alone. Family incomes under 100K and over 250K are much more highly represented than 100 - 250K. Therefore, you're not gettin kids from highly educated NIH families, for example.

I, too agree with 20:03. Prep has very strong academics and the students are incredibly well-rounded.

We were also disappointed to find that Prep's academics did not live up to its reputation.

My first boyfriend went to Prep in the 90s and he was a DOUCHE.

Knew a few in the 80ties in college, Ivy - entitled, snotty, snobby brats. Way worse than other prep school boys including similar Jesuit schools. No idea why but would not consider it for this reason for DS.

Same here, DS shadowed and after that we didn't even bother to finish the application. Seems they've been coasting for the past few years.
