VA: price of lower taxes?

Anonymous
I hear often that VA is better for businesses, etc. because of lower taxes, and MD has higher taxes to pay for liberal policies (union, etc.).

In the end, is there anything VA citizens give up for lower taxes?

Nobody wants to pay higher taxes, at least I don't think we do, but I've heard MD defenders claim higher taxes pay for things that we want (insert something here).

To flip that, does anybody in VA think they're missing out on anything due to their lower taxes?

Please don't see this as MD vs VA troll. Just curious if anyone living in VA think they're given up something. I don't think MD posters need to reply.

VA here. No I don't feel like I'm missisng out.

I feel ashamed of my pro-gun, pro-vaginal wanding state. But that has nothing to do with taxes.

the roads are way worse but it's a trade off for keeping more money. Fewer illegals and less crime as well. For some reason high taxes equal higher crime seems to make the state more attractive to criminals.

Best state universities on the East Coast. Great public schools, low crime, great property values, what is there to complain about?

Does MOCO have an income tax? FX went up dramatically in the last 10 years and split out stormwater. We moved from a high tax area and thought fairfax was low but it has increased more than the other property [NY area].

I live in Virginia. I grew up in Bethesda. I do not feel like we are missing out on anything.

I'm not sure if VA gives as many free things to the poor, like car seats, pack n plays, condoms, lottery homes, etc. But trust me, that in and of itself does NOT account for the doubling of MD's income tax over VA.

It's simply mismanagement,
plus MD includes Baltimore and PG - VA does not = money pits,
plus fewer businesses in MD to collect taxes from = less revenue.

Please stop parroting this; it's incorrect. VA's income tax is not lower than MD's unless your HHI is over $200K. I posted this in the Real Estate forum recently: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/228706.page#2327789 You need to make significantly over $200K HHI before the VA income taxes will rise above the MD taxes.

The reason that MD taxes are significantly higher is NOT income tax. It's all of the other taxes. MD has higher property tax, and adds a lot of other taxes on top of basic income tax. But the basic state income tax is lower in MD than in VA.

Moved from MoCo to NoVa - love it. I appreciate the public schools, public universities are fantastic and (relatively) affordable, and our public works projects (roads, bridges, and the like) all seem to get done faster than across the river.

Me too. I like Bethesda, but it just doesn't make sense for me to live there.

It is hard to watch our tax $ shipping south. I wish we did not have to subsidize the bible bangers and hicks.

What do you call those people living out there yonder in the panhandle?

Well let's see. Dc charges an arm and a leg with taxes and what do you get? Terrible schools? High crime? Crooks for public servants? Bloated government with terrible services? The answer? All of the above. I'll take VA any day.

Do you want virginia to turn into liberal md with high taxes and low income. Its these hick and bible banger policies that have created the wealth and good environment. In moco the state has to pay poor people and take care of them in va the religous organzations through donations take care of the needy. People dont realize that the entire culture causes the prosperity not just part of it.
