EmmaLINE or EmmaLEEN?

I think most Americans pronounce it the first way but Brits pronounce it the 2nd way. I say pronounce it the way you like and people will learn! Gorgeous name!

I'd say EmmaLEEN, but it's because I knew an Australian girl named Emmalina who pronounced it EmaaLEENa.

I prefer Emmalina to Emmaline.

EmmaLEEN. Otherwise the lovely A. A. Milne poem doesn't work!

BEFORE TEA

Emmeline
Has not been seen
For more than a week. She slipped between
The two tall trees at the end of the green...
We all went after her. "Emmeline!"

"Emmeline,
I didn't mean -
I only said that your hand weren't clean."
We went to the trees at the end of the green...
But Emmeline
Was not to be seen.

Emmeline
Came slipping between
The tow tall trees at the end of the green.
We all ran to her. "Emmeline!
Where have you been?
Where have you been?
Why, it's more than a week!" And Emmeline
Said, "Sillies, I went and saw the Queen.
She says my hands are purfickly clean!"

This is my friend's daughter's name, and she is EmmaLINE.

I think of EmmaLINE, like in the Ben Folds Five song.

I love the name Emmaline, but I am actually worried about the pronunciation battle between EmmaLINE and EmmaLYN. (The first of which I love, the second is just so-so, but seems more popular in the US.)

I'm sensitive to this, since my name is Caroline and have been dealing with people calling me Carolyn forever. The ending is spelled -line, so should be pronounced as such. If you want a different pronunciation, name her Emmalyn, Emmalean, etc. But, if you name your daughter this, she will deal with having her name mispronounced all the time.

This -- and spelled wrong too. I'm a Catherine, and get all versions of Cathryn, Cath-er-in, etc.

Actually I know someone with the name Caroline who pronounces it "Carolyn".

And she ruined it for the rest of us.

I'd pronounce it "LINE" and also think of the Ben Folds Five song. I love the name and considered using it if we'd had a girl.

No, it's just another US/UK difference.

It's really not. My British friends tend to get it right, for the most part.

Regardless, it seems like an easy rule to follow- if you want it said "lyn" spell it that way...
