Best case scenario is school is open on Tuesday. |
Teachers love snow days, just as much as the kids. |
What are these trainings for? Like, what is the subject matter? |
The Virginia Literacy Act requires that all teachers complete a Science of Reading training that complements the new curriculums it mandated districts purchase. New teaching graduates should already be learning this is school so it's a one time thing that they'll need to complete this year. |
So they have the 10 days and have used 4. They have plenty left. |
I’m happy schools are closed tomorrow. I hope Friday is off too. We are so out of the routine I don’t think my kids could get up on time even with a 2 hr delay! We need more time to get used to the idea of going back to school. lol. |
LOL trust me ES will be ok too |
More hot chocolate! More fun in the ❄️ ⛄️ snow! |
Do you mean the ice? |
Didn’t someone falsely claim way earlier in this thread that they don’t close schools for sidewalks and bus stops? Hahaha. Joke’s on them. Reid specifically mentioned them in her message. |
VDOT is majorly incompetent and failing. The procedures for clearing secondary roads is inadequate. School systems and children pay the price. Anybody mad at schools being closed should be blaming VDOT. Efforts need to be made to look at these policies and procedures. Anybody have contact info on who to complain to about VDOT?
Property owners need to clear sidewalks. Even still, there are many public sidewalks (no property owner responsibility here) that need cleared for kids to walk to school. FCPS has over 50K walkers! Does any other school system in the country have as many walkers? |
Just as an update, Loudoun tried to do activities after 4 pm yesterday and it was such a mess that half of them ended up canceled anyway and then they switched to a close at 8 pm after announcing a delay at 12 when they realized how bad the conditions still were in places. It’s just not gonna happen with roads and lots and sidewalks in the condition they’re in with the weather being this cold so nothing is meaningfully melting. I do not know why VDOT isn’t/wasn’t out with sand and salt when it would’ve made a difference but they weren’t and we’re just kinda stuck with this now.
Luckily the snow on Friday / Saturday has deteriorated to nothing so that shouldn’t further impede us. |
NYC does, but the city does a great job of clearing the snow. I agree with all your points. |
Can we even compare NYC which has underground public transportation that most students use and is a walking-based city with car-based suburbs? Like of course we can’t do school in the same conditions as NYC could, our students live a mile+ on busy 6 lane roads and intersections or ride buses that have to navigate icy conditions and not run on underground tracks. |
Any big city will have that many walkers. If a mile or less from school kids should walk. Same for bus stops. 1 mile radius from stop. We have become a nation of wimps. |
