Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| My 6 month old daughter is starting swim classes next month, and I have not found a bathing suit yet. I've been to TJmaxx, Ross, Old Navy, etc. Will it be odd for her to go "topless" since she will already be in a swim diaper? Does anyone know of any other stores that may have inexpensive swimsuits this time of year? |
| You might try shopping online - just Google - infant bathing suit- and you should come up with something. |
|
You might want to try the expensive stores - those shoppers go on vacations this time of year. They just had a bad Christmas, so things should be on sale.
Another solution - ask a friend. Someone you know has one to give or lend. I don't think they will let her in the pool with just a swim diaper - I know I wouldn't want them to. I bet they would let her in the pool in just a bikini bottom. Topless is fine. |
| One step up is having a sale on great swimsuits made with upf fabric. You probably don't need the upf for a swim class in january, but you may be able to use in during the summer (depending on how old your baby is). |
I was at a swim class with babies last year and some wore only a swim diaper. I don't think it's an issue. The swimsuit isn't doing anything...the diaper is what matters!!
As for finding an infant swimsuit, call Target and see when they are getting them in. We bought them for our son last year there and they had swimsuits early (not sure if January is still too early). They are online at Target though: http://www.target.com/gp/search/601-7537716-4432143?field-keywords=infant+swim&url=index%3Dtarget&ref=sr_bx_1_1&x=16&y=12 Another place that started carrying adult swimsuits already (and maybe kids' suits soon) is Costco. |
| This is kind of off topic but where is your child taking swim classes? I'm interested in enrolling my child in one. Thanks |
| oldnavy.com has swimsuits for kids and last year that's where I got mine for my then 18 month old and his January swim class. It's $5 shipping but to me that was worth it to avoid the mall and find the suit! |
| I signed up for infant swim classes through the Fairfax county parks and recreation. They have several classes in the week, but we signed up for a sunday morning class, so my husband could take part too. |

Our kids were always cold in swim classes they took as babies and toddlers. At one class, I think half the kids (or more!) were wearing baby wet suits to help them keep warm. So this is something you might want to consider.
We ended up getting a wet suit from www.warmbelly.com (because that's what a lot of kids in the group already had!). http://www.warmbelly.com/ I do think it helped them keep warm. So if you only want to spend money on one garment, something like this is probably the way to go! |
| my 14 mo DS is starting a class at the community center this week -- their brochure says something about a swim diaper AND rubber pants.... where can i find rubber pants?? he does have a swimsuit we were going to put over the swim diaper. |
| Baby Gap has them in the stores now. |
| I just bought one today at the Carters store down by Mt. Vernon. The selection is limited, but they have a good size range in the few styles they had. |
| I second the warmbelly rec for a wetsuit. The water gets so cold for the wee one. |
| Ditto on the wetsuit if your baby is in one of the lower weight percentiles. LLbean and lands end have them online. |
| PP who recommended wetbelly suits here--my kids weren't particularly low-weight (at least 50%) and still got cold in just a regular suit. I'm sure it depends on the pool, but in a cooler pool, a wet suit is probably good for everyone! (Even my husband would end up chilled in some of them--bouncing around in the water half-exposed is chilly work in a cold pool.) |
