Foot tendonitis post marathon

Anonymous
Got it diagnosed, so it's not a stress fracture. Left/middle part of my left foot. Am doing ice baths 3x/day, and doing a few weekly 4-mile runs. Any experience with this? Did it finally go away, and what helped? Pain started about 10 days before the race and got somewhat worse during race. Thanks!

GO to PT

I have it in my ankle and it has been a continual struggle ever since the injury. Definitely go to pt and make sure you follow the treatment plan long term.

Had that twice last year. Learned the hard way to stop running completely, and reduce walking as much as possible. Each time it too about a month to recover.

you absolutely have to stay off your foot. NO RUNNING. At all. I understand that sucks, but you're only making it worse by running on it. Minimize walking.

I advocate immobilization for tendinitis, particularly for athletes, as that's usually the only way I can get them to stop using whatever is damaged.

Ice. Rest. Anti-inflammatories in moderation. More rest.

Don't go back to running until you have been 100% pain free for at least a week. And a recurrence of symptoms means stop immediately. Do not "push though" the pain.

Finally, find an experienced physical therapist focused on getting high-level runners back to running. He or she can determined if your tendonitis is the result of an underlying structural issue. Untreated, that structural issue is just going to cause the tendonitis to flare up again. You have to find and address the root cause.
