WOHM-- When do you work out?

Anonymous
I just went back to work after a two year hiatus and I'm having trouble finding time to fit in my workouts (and a lot of other things for sure, but that's a whole other post). I have to be in the shower by 6:30, and I have a really hard time getting out of bed earlier than that. The alternative is to work out when I get home since I usually get home by 5:30 and the nanny leaves around 6:00. What do you do-- bedtime, wake time, workouts, etc. I need some inspiration please!!

I run 3 days a week right after putting my DS to bed. So it's usually around 8:30ish when I head out. I am not a morning person so I would never get up any sleep to exercise.

I'm a WOHM and I mainly exercise in the morning but my schedule is a little more flexible. If I'm not in the shower by 7:30, that's fine. I wake up by 6:30 and am working out by 6:45, either on the treadmill (in my basement) or I do any of a number of DVDs that I have, all of which are around 30 minutes long. Can you bring yourself to wake up at 5:45 a.m. and be working out by 6, for a half hour? I was just watching an infomercial for that new jillian michaels DVD set, and supposedly the workouts are all 30 minutes long, so right there you'd be set. I have a set of kettlebell dVDs (kettleworx, obviously I am a sucker for infomercials) and those workouts are only 25 minutes long from w-u to c-d, which is super-doable even if your time is really tight in the morning. If waking up that early is impossible, then force yourself to do something at night.

Early morning on the weekends while DH is home, 1-2 nights a week after the kids are sleeping, during lunch hour (although this is infrequent).

Basically, never. I go on a long walk each weekend morning and sometimes go to the gym instead.

I am taking a pilates class on Sunday nights. I exercise when my daughter is at her sports practice. And I am trying to fit in another couple of workouts per week too. I had been going to the gym after my daughter is in bed and then I was befelled by seasonal allergies. I need to get back to my schedule.

WE have a small gym facility and showers at work, so I relgiously work out on my lunch hour. I also work out early on weekend mornings.

Same here. It's hard, sometimes, to keep to it b/c of meetings that pop up and other emergency projects, but I try my best.

Lunch time (runs or gym) - usually 30 min/4x week.

After kids are in bed (DVD or weights/TV).

Weekend - long run while kids nap or in the AM. My DH and I switch off workout days on the weekend so we each get at least a good hour chunk of time for a workout.

Just find time. Trust me, you will feel so much better about life, your body, etc.

Early morning. Also not a morning person, but it only hurts for the first ten minutes. I get up at 5:20. I lay out my clothes the night before and sometimes actually sleep in them. I have a treadmill and cross trainer in my family room. I do a half hour of cardio followed by some weights five days a week. I'm in the shower by 6:15. One other thing that helps is that I have a job where I can eat breakfast at my desk, so I don't have to build time in for that in the morning. I make it the night before and heat it up once I get to work.

I do a combination of morning/after work/after bedtime. What really helped me was coming up with a schedule to stick with every week AND getting DH's buy in on it. It's a given that each sunday morning I"m at the gym and he's in charge, and that if the kids wake up before 630 when i'm working out, he's on top of it.

I found that once I we were all on board I felt less guilty (one of my biggest obstacles, how can i justify 'leaving' the kids when i WOH?). Also, having a schedule keeps me there; it's like going to work, just a part of the weekly routine.

Also, another idea for OP - how old are your kisd? Can you take them with you? Mine LOVE the day care at the gym & it's a special treat to take them

Whenever I can fit it in. I rarely do early in the morning but it happens sometimes. Lunch is something I do occasionally, but usually a class at the gym that won't make me sweat too much like pilates. Most of my workouts are in the evening. Running, yoga, or a video. I try to shedule it on Outlook with my DH ahead of time. It helps with both motivation and managing expectations.

Those of you who run during lunch, do you have time to shower after or what?

I think this really depends on you. I have high maintanence hair. Its frizzy naturally, long, and needs to be blow-dried. I can't run during lunch. If I could shower quickly, throw on some mascara and let my hair air dry, I would definitely run during lunch.
