Interesting....
Also note that whites are the minority in TJ http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/problem-or-progress-white-student-leads-black-club-at-n-virginia-high-school/2012/04/01/gIQArXXkpS_story_1.html |

Whites in the minority is nothing new... particularly if you start counting Indians -- many of whom do count as caucasian.
Now, the white Black Club president is just wrong. |
| I'm sure it was good for his college applications for Harvard and Princeton. Not so great for the black students turned away from TJ. |
| if my child were mixed asian would it help his or her chances to get into tj by no putting in asian? Are there quotas for TJ? |
Was this an April Fool's question? No quotas at TJ - how else do you think they ended up with a majority of Asian students? But I wouldn't identify your kid as Asian on the application if you could also identify him or her as multiracial. |
| It's odd, but the students in the club voted for him, so I don't think it's up to adults on the outside to second guess who can be elected to lead their club. |
He was elected president, not assigned the position. It seems right that the club can elect their own president. Or would you like the school to vet the candidates? |
|
I don't think it is odd that the students of the club elected him. The kid started an outreach program to increase the minority populaton at the school He invested a lot of time in the BSU. It is wonderful that this kid was elected on his accomplishments, and not hindered because of the color of his race. If only adults could be as open as children.

Mean while at WMATA with adults http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/mar/26/metro-derailed-by-culture-of-complacence-incompete/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS |
| Sounds like the kids voted for their President, so I have no problem with it. Sounds like he's done a lot to earn it. |
There are no quotas at TJ but the subject comes up a lot. Our kid is mixed and we also list him as multi/mixed/ or other when that is a choice. They really feel a need to segregate people into boxes but can't admit they do... It drives the bureaucrats crazy, it's fun to watch them squirm..... Kids these days, in this area, are post racial. They wonder what we old folks are talking about. Seriously....ask them. If he was elected by the club, it is fine for me. |
Why shouldn't they be alowed to choose for themselves? Should the school screen cantidates to make sure it's OK with a minority of adults? |
Only true in some environments. If you really believed this you might ask why there was a BSU for a white kid to lead in the first instance. |
This article was actually very fascinating, not necessarily in a good way. I think it deserves its own thread. |

The kids voted for him. No one put a gun to their heads.
I suspect that people who have an objection to this just can't handle kids who are actually integrating all on their own. Maybe one day they will vote to change the name of the club to the Student Union. Shocking. |
