I don’t understand how this could happen and how Wilson parents let it happen and not put up a fight and advocate against this? |

You are naive if you think when people make decisions in regards to middle school that they don’t look at what the track is with high school and how that will play a part in their middle school decision. So yes, what is going on in high school is very relevant in this thread when it comes to deciding between DCI and Deal. |
This is a pick your poison situation, for 40-50 total families with these particular choices. DCI is still unproven and pretty much has honors for all too. They just don't call it that since the MYP continues through 10th and DCI doesn't differentiate for anything except math and language. Even in 11th and 12th, students who are not pursuing the IB diploma will need to take a couple of HL classes to graduate and they will be in the same classes as the IB diploma track kids. Wilson has known problems, crowding among them and parents who don't like the honors for all but a track record of students successfully matriculating to selective colleges. If you are really undecided, the answer is to try DCI because you essentially lose that path after 6th grade. You can always go back to Deal or Wilson. |
Incorrect with DCI high school. There are 3 tracks as someone previously mentioned (IB diploma, CP tech, CP). The CP track is not college bound and do not need to take any HL courses. The other 2 are college bound with the CP tech having to take a few HL humanities courses but not the full humanities load required to get the IB diploma. |
Are you kidding me? 30 students in honors biology. Now with even less AP teachers, what is that number going to be? 40? 45? Just take away resources for the top students in AP, dumb down the curriculum in honors for all for the above average student, and focus on the bottom students. Once again, DCPS proves that it’s a disaster. What is so ironic is that doing all of the above is not going to make one bit of difference. It’s too late for the majority of these kids who are below grade level. Many also could care less about school, are unmotivated, skip school and classes, and are disruptive in the classroom. |
Yes, parents need to let Principal Martin, the Parent Teacher Student Organization (PSTO), and the Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) that "Honors For All" is a mistake. You can find email addresses here: https://www.wilsonhs.org/apps/pages/?uREC_ID=127889&type=d Here are a few thoughts: - Recent, authoritative research by the University of Chicago and Brookings has shown that detracking at the high school level is a big mistake. Anyone who went to high school knows this. There are good threads already on DCUM that highlight this research. See for example: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/105/789297.page - Principal Martin has steamrolled ahead with expanding "Honors For All" and in the process upending the traditional educational path with zero empirical research on its impact. After just one year, she expanded it from 9th to 10th grade. And she recently announced that Wilson this Fall will rollout "Honors Physics For All". What a total joke. She is sooooo far out over her skis - get ready for the wipeout. - At the time "Honors For All" was initiated, the school administration published an FAQ which was simply a dishonest puff piece that ignored the academic research, mischaracterized what other schools had done, and left out key facts. The primary justification given for "Honors For All" was the wholly unsubstantiated idea that there were "stark racial discrepancies in enrollment in 9th grade honors classes that did not correlate with aptitude." The FAQ claimed that Deal and Hardy middle schools did not provide sufficient information to identify which incoming freshman students were capable of honors work. So instead of trying to ascertain more information about the incoming students--which would seem the logical thing to do--the school administration simply decided to put every freshman student in honors. If that sounds dumb, it's because it is. The following year Principal Martin expanded "Honors For All" to 10th grade and subsequently to Physics. The principal justification for "Honors For All" was a purported lack of information on incoming student performance. But after freshman year Wilson itself has all the information it needs on student performance to determine which sophomore students are capable of honors coursework. So there should be no need to expand it to the 10th grade. By expanding "Honors For All" and thereby abandoning its original justification, Principal Martin lays bare her true intention which was to make a political statement, not an educational one. - If your Wilson student has had a bad experience with "Honors For All" please share it with the school and the parent organizations. - It's past time for Wilson to provide data and transparency in regard to "Honors For All". Our kids deserve it and parents should demand it. |
You may want to start another thread. I say that to be helpful! This is good for parents at feeder schools to hear about. |
This is a smart post. You're right about DCI being honors for all, which just doesn't bode well for IB Diploma or college admissions success. Thanks, PP. |
Great post, much appreciated. Oh Lord, please let her wipeout ASAP. Parents, rise up against this destructive political statement. It's very bad news for Deal and Wilson, especially for the bright poor kids in both programs. |
Yes. Let’s rally for the bright poor kids! |
Thread also states there is no selection criteria to be in AP. What a joke. So any old joe can decide to enroll in AP courses. No transparent academic selection criteria at all. No even sure why it’s not also called AP for all. |
On top of this, the consultant the school hired in advising leadership for this move lives in the Wilson boundary but sends her child to GDS. So it’s honors for all except her child of course. You can’t make this stuff up. |
She’s married to a law partner. You wouldn’t expect her to put her kid at Wilson with the poors. |
Let them eat cake for all. |
