DCI or Deal

The lousy Wilson head really (really, really) needs to go.

What are Wilson parents doing about this? Are they actually going to just let honors for all happen? Deal parents should be watching this closely.

Honors for All is already happening. For at least the last 2 years. The sky hasn't fallen yet there has not been a mass exodus of IB families.

Yes, because things get a lot better in 10th grade, many Wilson families can and will supplement to the tune of 5-figures to prevent having freshman year become a wasted year, and the conventional wisdom on the current barely-competent head is that she won't last.

Is the honors for all situation good? Heck no. Can Wilson and Deal parents change this calculus? No chance.

Isn’t the honors for all in 9th, 10th (and next year) 11th?

There is a special afterschool homework class designed to help kids with self-management and assistance with homework. The school publishes a schedule of each subject/teacher's support time. Hope Deal does as well by you!

I can attest to the “help” being there, but it also meant my DC never had a break and came home exhausted every day. DC worked extremely hard and felt like there was never an end to it all.

Can you explain your comment a bit more? I think this would be useful to understand better. Thanks!

By 11th students are mostly choosing their own classes including APs, and not taking the 11th-grade version of English 9, for example. So 'honors for all' is far less relevant. Also, with the Wilson student population rapidly becoming more homogenous in terms of SES, there will be far fewer 'less prepared' student.

There is much supplementation from families we know. 9th and 10th was basically boring years, not much challenging with 9th the worst. Now 11th is going to be the same honors for all. There is overcrowding in the school and classes and will be even more so in the AP classes with cutting back teachers there.

Instead of working to expand levels of classes (which is already typical in most high schools in the country), the school is moving to combine levels of classes so that the standard class and honors class are combined as one - not good at all especially when you have a school with 24% students at risk. I would not call that homogenous in terms of higher SES as PP mentioned or insignificant in “less prepared” students. Even within the higher SES kids, there are large variations of academic abilities. You just cannot meet all these needs accordingly by grouping them together.

This is why Wilson will no longer be a consideration for some families who have other potential options.

Arghhhhhhh. In-boundary parents really need to get more organized to fight honors for all.

Anticipated freshman class size at Wilson next year: 700 students.

Does anyone know if DCI plans to have any kind of music program (instrumental)?
