It's also BS because the crowds love jumpers who skate to more popular music. This idea that parents wanted their daughters to be Nancy rather than Tonya is something that was invented 25 years later. Nobody I knew wanted their kids to be either, but the crowds sure roared when Tonya jumped and skated in a way that seemed more related to the crowd. |
It seemed weird and pointless really I heard she ended her interview with Piers Morgan because he asked a few questions to confirm that Tonya acknowledged that Nancy was the real victim in the incident and Tonya wanted to talk about her upbringing. |
She was all that, and her reputation of a likable screwup served her well. Even when she was sentenced to five years' probation for dealing crystal meth, Bobek never had her career broken in a way that Harding did, because she was actually remorseful about it. The skating world never rejected her and she did a fine job touring. Harding, on the other hand...banned from amateur events and as for professional skating, everyone who was anyone refused to be on the same tour with her. |

Kerrigan and Bobek have recently skated together in show. I really think that Bobek has gotten it back together. Good for her! |
I read that article and was.... . She doesn't get it. She never will. Maybe she really just needs to move beyond this and stick with her Tonya P. identity. She has a 6 year old son and a husband.

| Once awards season wraps up in the next 6-8 weeks Hollywood and the general public will pay the same attention to Tonya Harding as they did before the movie, kinda like Amy Fisher. |

So, I saw the movie AND read the NYT article. I want to psychoanalyze Tonya. She's not smart. She's scrappy. She views herself as a victim (in the movie HOW many times did she say "It wasn't my fault."). She's uneducated. She's loud and verbally aggressive. She was raised in violence and then married into more violence. She claims to have been friends with Nancy. She was uncomfortable when people were kind to her (her skating coach). When the police came to the rink and said there'd been a death threat called in about her (that we later found out was done by Sean), she brushed it off and didn't care. At the end of the movie, there's a postscript where it says "Tonya wants you to know she's a good mother." I would LOVE to explore that - what does it mean to her to be a good mother? She doesn't stab or slap her child like her mother did to her? She values his education? What?
She claims she had no idea that Sean would hire a guy to club Nancy's knee. Jeff claims he had no idea Sean would hire a guy to club Nancy's knee. But Tonya never explained why she had Nancy's skate times written on a post-it. That is the ONLY moment where I'm like "so she WAS planning it?" I am kind of Team Tonya except for that. |
Whatever you think of who planned it and executed it, one thing is doubtless: if not for Tonya, Nancy would never have been whacked. |
This is true. But that doesn't make it her fault. It's Tonya's fault that she hooked up with a clown who had a delusional clown for a friend. But that's it (that we know for sure.) |
The only way that those clowns knew what Nancy's practice schedule was going to be was through Tonya. The only reason they had anything to gain from taking Kerrigan out was because of Tonya. Tonya even admits "overhearing" those creeps talking about attacking Kerrigan. That's messed up. You really think that Tonya wasn't involved in the plan? I think you're wrong. |
All that, and the fact that Tonya has never, ever expressed remorse about what happened to Kerrigan. She even had the gall to advance the theory it was all her fault for being stuck-up anyway and what kind of spoiled brat cries "Why me?? (it was actually just "Why??") when whacked on the knee? If her goons were any better at what they did, if that stick hit a few inches higher, Kerrigan would be maimed for life. It was a wonder she recovered as quickly as she did. |
| Of course she was involved in the planning. She got caught and made lots of excuses to save her own skin. Her hard upbringing is sad but not an excuse. |
