His direct boss didn't need to fire him. Trump could have let him go in January and the timing wouldn't be suspect due to the Russian collusion investigation.

This makes Trump look bad as does the 2nd paragraph in the firing letter.

Don't you need someone to review his conduct and write a formal memo to AG and President before taking an action in this magnitude? Back in January who would be that guy/gal and even have the time to do that in January?
