| The NW Current had a front-page article today about this. |
Wow. Some actual press coverage. Good for Elissa Silverman and Robert White for voting against the 'emergency' resolution and sticking up for the public process. Shame on Grosso, Evans and especially Cheh. |

Mayor Bowser sent a letter to Phil Mendelson today:
Dear Chairman Mendelson: Due to substantial concerns I have regarding the encroachment on the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches established in the Home Rule Act, I am returning the "Hardy School Disposition and Lease Authorization Emergency Amendment Act of 2016" unsigned. The Home Rule Act reserves to the Mayor the authority to to dispose of surplus District property. This bill would encroach upon this executive function by selecting a specific entity to which a property would be disposed. Although the bill does not mandate the disposition, the legislation is an overreach of the Council's legislative authority as the Executive is the proper body to initiate disposition of District property. Although I am returning the bill unsigned, my action should not be interpreted as opposition to the disposition of the Hardy School to the Lab School. I have directed agencies within my Administration to begin discussions with the Lab School regarding the potential disposition of the property. If those discussions result in an agreement between the District and the Lab School on terms and conditions for the disposition of the property, I will transmit legislation to authorize the disposition to the Council. This course of action will allow for the public to weigh in on such legislation. Sincerely, Muriel Bowser |
| I did not realize this was a big issue. Looks like a bunch of the typical loser NIMBs are at it agains. This is just like the Giant and Safeway development. I will send a letter of support to my council woman and the mayor. |
Wanting dcps to charge a market price is hardly a "nimby" attitude. We would love for neighborhood kids to move out of trailers and into the school. Another Lab school shill. Eyeroll. |
Wow. Good for Bowser. She promised to allow public comment and she's keeping her promise. may the best applicant for the ex- hardy school property win. |
or she wants in on the deal... |
And embarrass Cheh and Grosso in the bargain! |
This is the third time this has been tried since 2013, each time initially in secret, and once the plan became public the opposition was so strong it had to be withdrawn. Amazing they keep going back to the same playbook. |
+1. Exactly what I was thinking. She seems to be the most crooked of all crooks. |
Where'd you find this? I've been searching everywhere. |
And in a nice piece of ju-jitsu, turns the final approval back over to the Council. So if it blows up, it blows up in their faces. |
I got it on paper and typed it in. I don't think it's online anywhere yet (except for here). |
Wow. Will it get posted publicly eventually or is DCUM the only source for news on the ex-Hardy school deal? |
I don't know what the Council's rules are for posting documents. The NW Current has been following the story, they had a front-page story last week, and they were the ones who broke the story back in 2013. Without their original story it's likely the lease would have been extended by 50 years and no one the wiser. Then Lab could have gotten back to work on trying to get site control of Hardy Park. |
