close but slightly ahead in top tier order rankings:
1. Janney
2. Key
3. Lafayette
4. Mann

But you left out the handicap of having to deal with Janney parents, which moves it down the list several pegs.

But Janney has the Deal feeder, which pops it right back up there.

See, this can go on forever. There is always something.

NP I'll play. I actually ranked these schools for lottery. I am already IB for Deal (not at any of these). I also value scores which bring Janney down a little.

1. Eaton
2. Stoddert
3. Hearst
4. Mann
5. Lafayette
6. Janney
7. Murch (mainly due to renovation)
8. Ross

^^^ Fair enough. That was my posting, and I was mostly being silly. But your point is well taken.

Hearst seems to be rising, but Eaton consistently seems to punch below its weight. You'd expect that being located in the middle of Cleveland Park Eaton would be a stellar school, but compared to most in Ward 3 it's not top tier. Why?

Not top tier in what sense? Just because the IB/OOB %? Eaton performs best in almost every measure. I'm the one who ranked them. I am also AA. Eaton has some of the best scores for AA students as well as #1 or #2 for white students.

Source? Sorry, dear, but Eaton is not not JKLM tier.

Source: http://results.osse.dc.gov
Janney white students: 71% in English, 80% math
Eaton: 77% and 80%
Stoddert: 76% and 84%
**special note: AA students at Eaton scores 67% and 68%. Very small gap. Very impressive.

Now what were you saying about made up tiers?

Just stop it, that talk of "tiers" and "JKLM" as some sacred superior category is outdated and tiresome.

I like you.

The reality is that anxious parents will compete to pay an astronomical amount per sq. ft. to get into AU Park and Janney because they perceive it to be the best. Test scores, particularly in DCPS, are not the be all and end all of quality.

Are you guys quoting really, really long posts and only adding three words to bury the union issue?

So? Most schools in DC are 90%+ AA, which doesn't represent the demographics of the District either. Not every school has to mirror the city as a whole. Janney is a neighborhood school and reflects the demographics of the neighborhood.

I never understand why people make comments about certain schools not being diverse enough. They are neighborhood schools representing people who live in that neighborhood. Plus whoever gets in via lottery. A family in our building chose to send their kids somewhere else because our school is not diverse enough (they are AA).

Exactly. I care most about the academics, the extracurriculars and how well run the school is. Too many schools in DC tout their "diversity" as the be-all and end-all, and they're mediocre at best. Diversity is way overrated, IMHO.

I hope you are keeping that perspective to your self and not teaching it to your children.

Really? Honestly, would you rather have your kids go to a great school or a diverse one?

It's not an either or in this city for any category of school: public, public charter, private, parochial. Every category had good, diverse schools, and schools that are not diverse.

Janney, Key, Lafayette, Mann, Murch

Hearst, Oyster, Ross, Stoddert, Eaton, Shepherd

Honorable mentions to Brent and Maury

I'm not a Brent booster, but I'm not buying that the school is inferior to Hearst, Oysters, Ross, Stoddert, Easton and Shepherd (unless PARCC scores are all you care about. Come on, Brent is less than 5% FARMs this year (vs. more than 80% FARMS just 15 years ago) and 100% in-boundary for not just ECE but for K. Most Brent kids walk, bike or scoot to school, which makes for a far more cohesive study body than at schools on the line above. Brent PTA raises $400 K from around 200 families and has a strong fine arts program.

Brent is tne new Janney. They even got Janney's old principal. Hurray!

Pretty much, although the middle school feeder situation to Jefferson Academy remains a real drag (hardly Brent's fault).
