You definitely should be able to get a transfer - but not necessarily to one of those two schools. A lot of MCVS transfers go to George Mason, for example. You should get an east end school, though.

You will be able to opt out of dual language via administrative transfer, but you will be offered a school based on capacity. That is going to depend on registration numbers. Existing enrollment will mean nothing. If you're Alexandria West End, you will get no transfer to a real school, period. Don't even bother asking.

School Board last night clarified that you can and will be able to continue to opt out of Dual Language in grades where there is only Dual Language. Full immersion right now is K-1 only.

My son is in pre-k. We live on King Street across from the Masonic Temple, near the King Street metro. Currently zoned for Maury which is walking distance. Neighbors across the street are zoned for MacArthur but several have waivers for Maury. Do you think we will be re-zoned for J-H or MacArthur? Crossing King Street is very dangerous and we are much closer to Maury and J-H. I wish the redistricting committee would have more info on the proposed boundaries. We have friends who live in Old Town north of Braddock Rd. where that new development is and are zoned for Maury. Would make more sense for some of those families to be zoned for J-H than making Rosemont and near Masonic temple for J-H. Though J-H is very close to my house too.

I live right by there. From what I understand, this area is definitely being eye-ed by the Board to include in the Jefferson Houston catchment. It's fairly close and would relieve some of the overcrowding that McAuthur and Maury are projecting.

See the official ACPS redistricting site (EXTERNAL SITE: http://www.acps.k12.va.us/redistricting/ ). I would bet that anything on the S/E sides of Maury and the N/W sides of Lyles Crouch gets Jeff Houston. And before you ask, the answer is, no, the School Board could not possibly care less.

The redistricting committee won't even start the process of drawing new boundaries until the Fall. So you're only going to get conjecture on this forum.

There were always be an option out of dual immersion, but no guarentees is is to the school you are currently at. I would guess JH because it is the only school able to take on many more students. They have made it clear no on will be grandfathered, except for maybe a year I think.

No you, need to read the proposed policies online, but they aren't proposing to move anyone into a DL language only program who hasn't been there. You would keep your opt out transfer.

This is NOT CORRECT. As currently proposed a programmatic transfer out will stay transferred out unless they want to go to the newly assigned school. However, unless this child knows Spanish, they wouldn't be allowed to go to MVCS at 2nd grade anyways. Programmatic transfers are those out of MVCS (DL) and out of Tucker (year round) and out of years 6 through at a K-8 program.
