So based on this
http://esbpublic.acps.k12.va.us/attachments/a223e5be-8075-4829-8ce5-65b0fb1b5312.pdf It looks like all the folks who are in Del Ray and opted out of dual language at Mount Vernon will be able to stay at their existing schools? Agreed? |
looks that way. |
| "Students who have opted out of a school program and are currently attending a school outside of their attendance zone via programmatic transfer will be allowed to remain at their current school." |
So families who transferred out can stay at their schools, but families in general who get redistricted will be forced to move unless they're in 5th grade because of this ridiculously stingy grandfathering proposal. What a joke. |
No this doesn't apply to transfers, would only apply to people who opt out (yes, a form of transfer) of mandatory dual language at MVCS or year round calendar at Tucker. Assuming these kids were sent back they would have the ability to turn back and transfer out again (which they presumably would)-- so it short cuts that process. |
| Does anyone see something that says that in the future families will be able to opt out of dual-language programs? Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't seem to be in there. I assume that's a mistake? The document talks about people opting in to dual-language, but not out? |
It looks like this is governed by policy JC–R / JCD-R http://www.acps.k12.va.us/board/manual/jc-r.pdf That says that guaranteed opt out is for modified calendar only (Tucker). However, I can't imagine a forced dual language curriculum on families (MVCS). |
| Anyone have a sense of if they will be allowing admin transfers this year? It sounds like they wouldn't necessarily be honored beyond a year? Is that right? |
It doesn't seem like anything has been settled for sure, but I wouldn't bet on the transfer being honored next year. |
Within-East-side transfers are likely to be honored. Transfers from a West- school to an East-school will not be honored absent extraordinary circumstances or a blanket-eligibility (like, an ACPS employee bringing child to own or adjacent school). Tucker transfer-applicants will be guided to other West-end schools. |
What's your authority for these assertions? |
Read the ACPS releases and look at where the current transfer are (the aggregate information is fully public); at present, most parent-requested and program-based transfers are West-to-East -- in the future, transfers will be dramatically more closely scrutinized and frequently rejected. The modifications to the text of ACPS policy JC-R say so explicitly. Both JC-R and proposed JCE also provide that non-programmatic transfers will not be full-program-duration -- they will be valid for one year only. NOTE: The following link is to an external site (ACPS) and further links to several documents: http://esbpublic.acps.k12.va.us/public_itemview.aspx?ItemId=7565&mtgId=887 All a straightforward function of statistics. |
Agree that transfers will be closely scrutinized and not liberally granted. Still not sure how you derive from any of these materials that within east side transfer requests are likely to be honored but W-E will be treated differently.... |
| We are trying to transfer out of MVCS for next Fall. Hoping for Maury or Barrett. Any chances? We do not want dual language. |
I was told that opting out of MVCS will continue to be allowed since MVCS went 100% dual language. This was during a redistricting meeting I attended. |
