We need more psychiatrists around here who focus on adolescents!
This is what I do! I tell many of my med students to consider psychiatry. It’s interesting, it’s in high demand nearly everywhere, easy to work any number of hours depending on how much money you want to make, and there are multiple different avenues you can take with it depending on what interests you. It’s also, I believe, one of the few professions that improves your relationships with other people. And I am paid just fine.
Any downsides? Considering this field.
Psychiatrist here. The biggest downside is that it is the minivan of specialties. No matter how great it is and how perfectly it fits your life, you have to deal with the fact that no one will ever, ever think you are cool.
I mean the downsides depend on who you are and how you considered your life in medicine would look. Do you want to see patients in a physical sense -- because if you want to be listening to heart and lungs and looking at EKGs and blood work, merely talking to people isn't going to be enough for you. And let's be real while there is a push towards mental health, there is still a stigma amongst many (not all) drs. that you only become a psychiatrist if you can't hack it in real medicine. Obviously this doesn't matter to those who really WANT to do psychiatry -- they don't care what anyone else things. But I find it does matter a bit to the ones who were never truly drawn to it but did it because it's flexible in terms of hours, job availability etc.
