Well, yeah, because there is no way for a bank to repossess or foreclose on your education. |
exactly. so many of these kids borrow a shitload to live large when in school. I knew law students borrowing extra tens of thousands just to have nicer apartments, or to go out more at night, or to not have roommates. I lived with my parents and went to a regional school and came out with $20K in debt. |
+1. I definitely knew law students who lived like biglaw associates in a smaller northeastern city. They needed to be in doorman buildings in one of the fancier parts of town, go to the local restaurants in that part of town etc. -- when the dorms and the campus eateries were more than sufficient. Of course this was 8+ yrs ago when they were fairly certain they'd get biglaw jobs and have no problem paying off the debt. But still it adds up and when they got tired of the biglaw grind after 3-4 yrs, they were stuck because they still had significant debt to service. |
So why can gambling debt be discharged? |
| I never lived on campus and was recently shocked to find out that colleges have made it very difficult for students to not live on campus. |
Nothing was expended towards the debt. |

I started with $108k 11 years ago. I'm down to $17k and will pay it off in March with my tax refund plus savings.
I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!! |
| I'm the OP of this thread. We're down from $400,000 in student loan debt to a little over $100,000!!! Just wanted to give hope to others out there - you can do it! |
| Awesome! How did you do it? |
All extra money to the loans, starting with highest interest rate first. No real vacations, no luxury purchases, watched spending on food, where we seemed to blow a lot of $$. No going out really either. |
|
Maybe, just MAYBE, the problem doesn't begin with the individuals who owe a shit ton. MAYBE the problem is in the system to begin with. Why on God's green earth should ANY school be able to charge a 22 year old that much tuition who has NO money of their own, and then continually compound on top of that ridiculous interest rates? What other situation in life is a person allowed to take out that large of a loan with no assets, no credit history, no savings?
WHY should a person have to choose between being buried in debt to get an education in order to HOPEFULLY a find good/fulfilling job and being uneducated and poor the rest of their life??? WHY the fuck isn't a quality education more affordable!? Wake up people, take the hood off your eyes. Sure, people should know what they are getting themselves into when they sign that dotted line, essentially signing their life away to be an indentured servant to the government for 10 + years. But guess what? The choices are pretty dismal for people who cant get a scholarship or don't have a family to pay for it. I certainly don't blame anyone for choosing to better themselves and the lives of others by getting an education. |
Yes, every man out for himself. You are so noble. I wish i could be as selfish as you. Our country is really going places with MF*ckers like you. You should expect more from yourself, you can do better than that. |
| OP, has whichever one of you is the doctor thought about the National Health Service Corps? Is there something like that for lawyers. I mean, it's INSANE to have that much debt. |
There's a happy medium here, PP. If people were complaining about $50 or even $100k in loans, I'd say fine. But $400k shows some serious, serious lack of judgment. |

I don't understand the thought processes behind taking on 300/400K worth of student loans.
What made you think that an amount like that would be o.k.? Did you really expect to make millions straight out of college? I'm just mystified as to how a reasonably responsible person with an ounce of money sense could convince themselves that such an enormous student loan debt was a smart thing to take on. Did you think that the loan amount was so outrageous that it would be surely forgiven? I'm not bashing you, I'm just wondering wth you were thinking... |
