Honors English 9A, MP1: What is your child reading?

Anonymous
Not reading a book this quarter.

LISTENING to not all of a book in class time, then using Sparknotes to finish up.

What is the teacher being paid for? To play media to the clas?

Wait your 9th grader isn't reading, just listening to an audiobook? What school?

Our school does this too. Its terrible for kids who struggle with auditory issues. We always bought the book. Or, if its not an audiobook its a movie.

We are in a different district and there’s no differentiation in 9th grade ELA, they read The Book of Unknown Americans and then Romeo and Juliet and I forgot the very first book, I think it was a choice of Born a Crime or To Kill a Mockingbird

This sounds more challenging than the options MCPS has, particularly for the fall. Also, as PPs have stated, with the more challenging book like Romeo and Juliet, kids aren't necessarily reading the texts--they are watching the movie or listening to the audio.

Pathetic.

I’m confused by OPs post — is she saying these are the only options for honors English 9? That’s what mine is taking.

I wish I never read Of Mice and Men. It's gross.

I saw the movie. I don’t see it as particularly appropriate for 9th grade, even though Steinbeck had my utmost respect.

Mine watched a movie for Romeo and Juliet, and had one book in 9th.

I got the book from the library so my kid could read it.

Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for caring so much for your students to do this, but also yikes, you really shouldn't have to.

Many of their IEPs indicate use of highlighters and I was like, “how can I provide this needed accommodation with a school issued book?” I am still new at this Special Ed gig so I am very much worried about compliance.

Did you ask? Did the school offer digital versions that would allow for highlighting? Was it specific to physical highlights?

We did not have digital, markable versions of the books. It was easier for me to just buy 40 used copies of the book.

Are there actually a new list of novels they read in 9th grade?
