Great thread!! I agree with everyone and as a 50+ GenX, I have to add "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil |
Smells like Teen Spirit can’t be before your time as a late X. I was born in November 1978, so also the tail end of Gen X, and Smells Like Teen Spirit came out in in the Fall of 1991 and was everywhere. If you’re an X, you were at minimum in middle school when this song came out. |
I’m a 1979 baby so just barely X and Nirvana was all over the place when I was in 7th grade—and I was a pretty sheltered kid. If you were too young for Nirvana you’re not a Gen Xer, period. |
"Every Breath You Take" is a song by the English rock band the Police from their album Synchronicity (1983). Written by Sting, the single was the biggest American and Canadian hit of 1983, topping the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for eight weeks (the band's only No. 1 hit on that chart), and the Canadian RPM chart for four weeks. Their fifth UK No. 1, "Every Breath You Take" topped the UK singles chart for four weeks. It also reached the top 10 in numerous other countries. In May 2019, the song was recognized by BMI as being the most played song in radio history.[6][7] |

“Situation” |
“Livin’ on a Prayer” |
Belinda Carlisle - Heaven on Earth |
Huh. I’m Born late 79 so I guess it wasn’t? Maybe it just wasn’t popular where I grew up? |
In 1989 some girls in my freshman dorm also played Closer I am to Fine by the Indigo Girls constantly. Since it was in the Barbie movie maybe it is now a cultural touchstone. |
They definitely were big for certain segments of GenX |
My Name is Luka |
