Where do the people in the $6/7/8m+ mansions in send their kids?

There are limousine liberal parents who value public schools. It is a thing.

Maybe they did not get admitted. Things have changed. Being wealthy is not an automatic in.

I think that’s true and also that the parents didn’t care enough to try to work the system or whatever. There’s a level of wealth where you don’t really need the branding.

I’ve also known kids of very wealthy people to attend “meh” colleges. The parents coulda put their names on a building and made a better admit happen but I think they just didn’t care to.

Most likely they were smart enough to recognize that their child didn’t belong in an Ivy or whatever and the “meh” college as you put it was perfect for their child.

Like Cass Sunstein and Samantha Power? Oh wait, they are private.

Combo of tutors and starting their own ‘school’ for the one I know. Partly because of extensive business travel. Kids are worse off, unfortunately, would have been better off with the stability of a very plain public school. Sometimes too many options are a bad thing.

Private day school if they really love (and like) their child.

Spoken like someone who has no knowledge of boardings school, or is jealous because they aren't willing to spend that much money for their children to have a superior experience.

Superior, how? 🙄

No, spoken like someone who loves her children and actually enjoys spending time with them. My children have attended a “Big 3” since kindergarten. Money and/or jealousy isn’t the issue.

Btw, I’ll send my children to “boarding school” when they’re 18. It’s called college. I’m in no rush…unlike you.

Pretty much everyone I know who went to boarding school loved it. And worked hard to be able to give their kids that same opportunity. The only anti-boarders are the clueless who have zero first-hand experiences and/or those who can't afford it.

I know at least a dozen people who graduated from a variety of boarding schools. Off the top of my head, they attended: Deerfield, Choate, Phillips Exeter, Phillips Andover, and Madeira (boarding, not day). Only the Madeira alum sent her daughter to boarding school (also Madeira). The others refused to even consider boarding school.

I know adults who boarded at Deerfield and Phillips Andover. I’ve never asked them what they thought about it. I also know a few dumb as bricks hockey and lacrosse players who went to the fifth year boarding schools. A couple went professional but done at around 30.

I thought Deerfield specialized in something but I can’t think of it.

Sidwell costs the same as the other Big 3, so that’s sortof a silly distinction. And basically the same as all the other non-Catholic schools in that cohort (Landon, Holton, Potomac, Maret, GDS, etc.). I’d bet my life that no full pay family has ever decided between these schools based on the negligible tuition differences.

And, these other schools have the same recruited athlete phenomenon, so I don’t think that you can conclude that therefore The Richest DC Families Go To Sidwell.

I’m very curious about your statement that the financial aid is going to recruited athletes at Sidwell. That assumption — and I’m guessing that you don’t actually know — strikes me as a really bad one. I mean, maybe for basketball? But, athletes tend to already be semi-rich kids. Look at the families spending $$$ on private lessons, expensive travel clubs, hotels and airfare all over the country. These are not the poor chickens at our school.

You clearly don’t like Sidwell, but that’s not my problem. You also shouldn’t allow your opinions and emotions to interfere with facts.

“Sidwell costs the same as the other Big 3…”

2023-24 Tuition:
St. Albans (Day School): $55,468
Sidwell: (Grades 9-12): $55,140
NCS: $53,210
GDS (Grades 9-11): $51,325
It is also a FACT that no other “Big 3” provides less need based financial aid than Sidwell (NCS ties Sidwell at 21%).

“Other schools have the same recruited athlete phenomenon…”

Really? Which athletic state championships have GDS, STA and NCS won within the past 5 years? How many of their athletic teams have been NATIONALLY ranked within the past 5 years? How many professional athletes have those schools produced?

“I’m very curious about your statement that the financial aid is going to recruited athletes at Sidwell.”

First, I didn’t say ONLY recruited athletes receive financial aid. My (non-recruited athlete) daughter plays two varsity sports at Sidwell. She’s friends/acquaintances with many athletes across multiple sports. There are only a handful of new recruited athletes for most of Sidwell’s sports each year…and students talk. My daughter has been told, DIRECTLY, by several sports recruits (across multiple sports), that they’re receiving financial aid. I guess those students don’t think it’s some sort of shameful secret, as you clearly do.

This was by far the weirdest comeback post of all time. You strangely made the original poster’s point for them. As if any rich person would choose NCS over Sidwell to save $2,200.

The athlete fight is also totally weird. I’m sure we’ll hear from all the STA folks about their famous athletes and Landon and whomever else. Listen, the idea that Sidwell is some sort of athletic powerhouse like the catholic school —ok, ok basketball—is just not what most people think about your school.

And I had really been impressed with the Sidwell grads I knew in person but this post reminds me that there are dumbbells everywhere.

Many Sidwell kids I know are super nerds and lack social graces...harsh but a reality.

Not my experience.

Actually it’s clearly the ultra wealthy and billionaires writing these comments :/

The point is that other schools don’t follow the same practice, or at least not to the same extent.

St John's does.

This is not something new in the world of high school sports. Some schools do it, some don't - some do it just for certain sports. Sidwell does it for tennis and basketball. Other schools do it for lacrosse, or whatever.... It's life. If you don't like it, choose a school that doesn't have sports teams or one that doesn't recruit for sports.

I meant other schools of the same academic caliber.

That’s my point. It’s as if schools are only allowed to be superior in one area—academics OR sports. The prevailing sentiment seems to be, “ how dare Sidwell excel in both areas!”

Obviously, that’s Sidwell’s choice. I never said or thought “how dare they”. That said, I do find it surprising and a bit pathetic.

Pathetic because Sidwell is dominating DMV schools in academics, basketball, and tennis?!? Pathetic indeed! 😂

Academics? Ah, no. Tennis? Maybe girls but not all around. Hoops? Didn’t Visi beat you last year?

Sidwell dominating other DMV private schools? Check (based on college matriculations and percentage of NMSFs).

Sidwell dominating other DMV schools in girls tennis? Check (ISL champions for FOUR straight years, and ranked #2 in the nation).

Sidwell dominating other DMV schools in basketball? Check
Boys:
1. BACK TO BACK (2022 and 2023) DCSAA Champions, and their third championship title in the past four seasons; and
2. National titles, including the State Champions Invitational; and
3. At least TWO current NBA players.

Girls:
1. BACK TO BACK (2022 and 2023) DCSAA Champions;
2. National titles, including the State Champions Invitational; and
3. Recent players who have won:
Gatorade National Player of the Year (2022),
McDonald’s All-American Player, including MVP (2022 and 2023).

Sidwell vs. Visi? Please be serious.

Check?

Oh wait.

That is BIM.

You obviously don’t know anything about Niche’s methodology. Only an ignorant fool would cite it as authoritative source.

bullis

For one they probably could get not accepted into the Big 3. Also Bullis is in Potomac and there is a lot of wealth there and why would you send your kid 30-40 minutes away every morning when you have Bullis right there. It is not a top 5 school but it is a good enough school for many and the facilities are quite nice.

So we should listen to an ignorant fool like you, anonymous poster?

Niche is quite reliable for general rankings.

Not when BIM is ranked #1. That defies logic and basic common sense. You will never be able to convince me that BIM ranks above Sidwell/STA/NCS/GDS.

NEVER!
