New MacAuthur Principal

Good to see this school is part of the Equitable Access Program. Only downfall is that it will take students away from other HS that may be struggling with enrollment.

“equitable access” based on the conflicting notions that schools with high-achieving students are such an important commodity that all kids deserve access, AND that it is racist to advocate for the school to have a high achieving curriculum.

That's quite a straw man. Nobody has called people racist for advocating for a high achieving curriculum. Accusations of racism on this thread have been levied when ppl dismiss this man bc of his past experience

The squashing of high achievement is long-standing. No gifted and talented programs, Honors for All, etc etc. DCPS is only about bringing the bottom up while leaving the highest potential students to manage on their own. The issue is not specific to this thread, although this principal’s background is consistent with DCPS’s singular focus on improving opportunity for the disadvantaged.

He doesn’t have any experience or stated commitment to administering a high school with a challenging academic curriculum. If you say that concern is racist - then yes, you are engaged in the absurdity.

What gets me is that DCPS is *also* failing all the potentially strong students in low income schools. Stanton Elementary (Dr McCray’s school) has a handful of kids that score 4s on PARCC and a bigger handful that get 3s. These kids should be uplifted and challenged, sent to acceleration and gifted programs. A W7/8 gifted program could take all of the 4s and get them ready for college.

I’m wondering if you think the new MacArthur principal is qualified? You haven’t said yet.

dp: Qualified? Yes, he is “qualified” in that he has been principle of a high school before. A lot of people are “qualified” for the job. I’m sure DCPS has resumes from many qualified people. But is that enough to get hired for any professional job?

What about excellence?! What about great fit? If “qualified” the goal, it’s no wonder that DCPS is stuck in mediocrity.

I still can't get past the diploma mill PhD. The type of people who fudge standing aren't my first choice to mold young people and help them establish their standing in life but I guess he checks the right boxes for some. I rather have a strong person with a bachelors who was ok with who they are. I wonder how many times he or his wife emphasizes Dr. when mingling

I still can't get past the wanting to work with kids who have parents like you. Speaks a lot to a damaged state of mind.
