What does this even mean? You claim none are impressive but then say you’ve only seen one play????!!

Depends which age group you are talking about. I know of one age group where the B team isn’t very strong, but most age groups are pretty competitive

5th grade boys.

I haven’t seen the 5th grade, but I know a lot of them left last year for Durant, Takeover, Mew World, etc.

Current 5th graders. They said there was no team last year and the team was "new". There is only one team.

Darn it. Our DS should have tried out for it. We heard from friends that one (or two) of the Fairfax Stars teams is also not very competitive.

It is so hard to have to commit to a team within a few days when other tryouts are ongoing or haven't started.

Yeah, that’s what Roy Williams thought about Walker Kessler.

Are there two Fairfax Stars teams for 5th grade boys?

I know one kid who made the 11-U Nova 94 and I was pretty shocked. I assumed these teams were hard to make.

Keep in mind all they have are tryouts to go by. So maybe that kid did well during tryouts. I was shocked by some picks too since we know the kids personally but will admit they played better during tryouts than they ever have during house games.

An experienced coach willl be a able see within minutes if a kid can play

Any thoughts on this year's 5th grade teams? I'm talking about 11 year old boys who will be in 6th grade in the fall. Tryouts are coming up soon!

Try DNA, Slam City, Washington Warrior’s,

I meant that I've seen all the teams play several times except Ffx Stars which I've only seen play once which I realize can be an anomaly based on who was there. The other two I have a better sense of their skillset which on the whole wasn't all that impressive to me.

The boys side of the stars fell off. I don’t even see them at the major tournaments or anymore.

Thanks. So there are two elite AAU teams in northern Virginia?

The "elite AAU teams" (tiers 1 & 2) are primarily based in Maryland, but the larger Virginia AAU orgs have a few very good (elite?) teams in various age groups.

It's hard for an established club to have elite teams because teams that form around the biggest prospects are the ones that end up being elite.

Team Melo and the Slam n Jam Hoyas are elite in that age group. MD Bulls and Team Thrill are also elite at that age group.

LOL. I feel like this post was written by a 12 U player.

We watched the NoVA Cavs 12U team play at St James this weekend. The Cavs were way ahead in the 2nd half yet we didn't notice many substitutions, if any, from the bench. The 12U coach (also a Vienna FCYBL coach) is notorious for only playing his starters (see last year's posts in this thread).

DS is trying out for another NoVA Cavs age group this weekend. Is this typical for the Cavs... only playing starters and not playing some on the bench? Carrying a large team is good for the Cavs to defray costs for their prized stars/starters I suppose!

I believe the individual you are referring to is the 11U coach as that is the age group he coaches in FCYBL. Perhaps he coaches both age groups?

Depends on the coach and the program. My son plays AAU for one of the programs mentioned in this thread and he's played various other AAU teams (not all his age either because AAU is a cesspool) but there were certainly times when his team was getting their head kicked in by one of those high level "invite only teams" (and that aint TM or TD) and most of their starters played most of the time.

At one point last season, my wife was at a tournament with my son and one of the Team Melo teams had just finished a game and she said and I quote "I've never heard anyone use the F word that many times in 2 minutes and his team won by 30 points."

I think his kid plays up a year in 12u

It’s 11U but he’s moving to 12U this spring and taking his nephew (who should be 11U now) with him. His brother will coach 11u though he will surely be involved.
