How is MCPS determining red, yellow, green?

The only cases we should really be caring about are the cases reported today, the first actual day of school after winter break. The ones on 1/3 and 1/4 really are irrelevant as kids weren't in school those days so there was no community spread. But, MCPS is choosing to base their decisions to close schools on completely irrelevant data so there isn't much we can do but ogle at the numbers.

They’re just papering up transition to virtual so the state stays off their back. They should be starting every school in the green and 0 cases…but this is just a scam.

This is a very 2020 or 2021 way of thinking about what is to be tracked and why.

Really? Why? Do tell.

you got what you voted for. Don’t complain.

MoCo needs tax dollars to operate.

Moco is awash in tax dollars -they tax the rain, they tax plastic bags, they tax backpacks, they tax alcohol, they double tax gas, they’re raising property value taxes again. Red states do way more with way less.

This. Democrats are fiscally irresponsible. Everything they touch they ruin.

Exactly. This is why massive, historical amounts of people are moving from mismanaged blue states to red states.

And hopefully you will be joining them soon.

+1.

There is no need to turn this into a red/blue thing here. MCPS is wrong, but MANY MANY (most) blue states are staying open, closing only for staffing issues. Nearly all the democrats I know believe schools should be open. The "close school" people are now very few, and they don't have science on their side, and we probably should ignore them instead of engage, because they have no influence any more.

Quit using COVID as a political wedge against public schools.

I agree with the bolded, but at least in my (very blue, relatively well-off) neighborhood, the "close school" people are very loud and they are absolutely convinced that they have science on their side. I can't even engage with my kid's PTA listserv because it devolved into hysterics about how we must close schools to save our kids.

As they jump into their Prius with a mask to drive… alone.

I sincerely believe that the “close schools now” crowd are Republican operatives trying to duplicate Virginia elections in Maryland.

Oh please. Stop blaming others. Some people care about their kids health and safety.

MCPS is NOT closing down the school system so I don't get all the drama. You won, at the expense of others.

1) I agree they can be loud, but in most districts and states, the (democratic) leaders are NOT listening to them and are reiterating the importance of in person learning.

2) I do think republican operatives are somewhat in the mix (they are very good at this type of thing by now, and someone who said it is "obviously" the same rhetoric, don't you think it would be pretty simple to imitate?). But very unlikely to be on a PTA email list using real names. And seems like the talking points I'm hearing are more like "democrats are closing your schools!" and "democrats want zero COVID policies!" and other falsehoods.

3) MCPS is not closing down, true, but the approach they have chosen to go with is going to result in more closures than an approach based on "close if you don't have staff to open". I don't think it is logical and in line with a post-vaccination COVID world. On the other hand, January is going to be a cluster of chaos no matter what MCPS decides, and I can't fix that.

No one won. Individuals can't "win" a pandemic, we all will have to win this together. IMO, that happens by endemic COVID via Omicron, better treatments, a vaccine on offer for the <5s, and off-ramps for restrictions like masks, distancing, and quarantines. There are other opinions out there, but this is the dominant opinion right now. Red or blue.
