At what HHI did you stop feeling middle class?

The top 5% of HHI in the DC metro area is 212K. Somewhere along the way, the word "middle"got confused with the phrase "not uber wealthy with net liquid assets in the 9 figure range".

You people who claim not to be middle class only when you hit 400K are simply out of touch. God save us from your twisted elfish souls.

You people saying $400-$600k live in a freaking fantasy land.

I don't get it. We have a $160-180K income and we have a fully paid off cheaper house, fully paid cars and college/retirement.

I felt it awhile except my insanely cheap husband won’t let us enjoy anything even at $400k+ (But since he earns most of it DCUM tells me he gets to decide)

at 450k I certainly still feel middle class. I mean, I live in a townhome for gods sake. Maybe when I get this 5k/month mortgage (15 year mortgage) paid off and stop paying 50k/year for daycare for two kids I will feel not middle class anymore.

We make 500-600k+

We have a beautiful house and modest cars. Outside of that we live a middle class “mindset”

We know we aren’t middle class though..we splurge on our home and our kids.

We stopped feeling middle class when our income hit 200k. However, I know that middle class really means more like 100K HHI.

In my mind "upper class"==no need to work or worry about money and "middle class" people work.

But at 300K and no daycare/college expenses, I felt a shift when I no longer balanced my checkbook regularly or kept a running tab of what my credit card statements would look like.

I’m in a relatively LCOL area and at $250k feel UMC.

Well we make 750/800k and I just balked at airfare for April break! 3700 for 5 people to Caribbean island. We’re still going but I might downgrade our accommodation from 1100 a night to 800 a night.

Make a choice for yourself. My DH makes three times what I do and our financial decisions are absolutely jointly made.

Same here. I'm not even working but finances are joint. However, i'm the frugal one so he knows money is in good hands.

420k hhi. Still waiting. Old cars, house needs repair. 2 kids in private to avoid disasterous public schools really takes a toll

Surely you both understand your husbands are agreeing to this, either explicitly or implicitly.

I’ve never felt middle class. I’ve always lived a privileged life. Always.
