Did MCPS do a sneaky thing for the magnet lotteries?

It's funny I found the information that was on their website in the past thorough and helpful. It seems like a lot of people just jump to these conclusions without ever trying to find answers for themselves.

Speaking of which (NP), it looks like CogAT for Grade 5 select students is November 8-19, 2021.

Wow, thank you for sharing. Very helpful document.

I get why they test 3rd, 5th and 8th but what's with testing 7th graders?

I'm assuming it has something to do with this: "All Grade 2 students are screened for gifted and talented identification during the second semester of the school year. Students in grades 3, 5 and 7 who are new to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) or who have been recommended for re-screening are also screened each school year."

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/enriched/about/faq.aspx

So are they testing to have Cogat as a criterion for magnet selection or just GT identification for kids new to the system?

No one knows anything. I would love for the person who keeps insulting people to provide a link on the MCPS website that "clearly" explains what they are doing this year. MCPS is just an embarrassing organization.

Yeah, right. Look at all those Blacks and Hispanics enrolled into A+ CogAt prep Saturday school to take advantage of the system.
STFU.

So much anger and hate! Please chill.

The levels of comfort people have expressing anti-Asian racism is really disturbing.

Not that PP, but the MCPS website does clearly state that information is coming, possibly as soon as this week. Not having released it YET is not actually the same as never releasing it.

In the past even it's always been on their website. They have never provided an exact formula but they always listed all the factors. The relative importance of them you can kind of guess at based on what people have written here over the years, but sure it's a guess that CogAT was weighted the most.

They don't. They're letting some kids in the ghetto schools into the program with an 85%. That's average.
"Ghetto schools." Cute.

Trolls gotta make a living, too, I guess.

50% is average. Top 15% is NOT. If a lot of kids fall into the top 15% at your particular school, that's your own over-prepping fault.

I am not understanding if this is evidence of transparency or lack of transparency? Seems to me that at the minimum it is evidence of poor communication. Is the CogAT for placement or something else? They are so transparent that no one knows what methodology they will use this year. The problem for MCPS is that it is easy for people to infer bad intent because they are continually so sloppy.

Even if they were to explain you'd fail to grasp it and just complain so I understand why they don't bother.

So you can certainly explain to me in detail how they are using CogAT this year and what other criteria are going to applied and how in detail?

You seem to have a problem insulting people but this will be a 3rd year in a row that MCPS has used a different process and the idea that it is well documented is just untrue. Otherwise it would not be a surprise to people that they are administering CogAT this year.

It sounds like they're using the pre-pandemic process. This would make perfect sense.

Yep

And this is clearly explained on their website? Obviously no.

It is but you need to have some basic reading comprehension to grasp it.

Since my 85% is from CCES that's one of the ghetto schools?

There was a different link at that's what I found helpful back when my kids were that age. It explained everything back then but I guess it's changed so even if it still existed it would be out of date, but FWIW last year was an 85% lottery. That's all you need to know.

LOL... so cute that you think any kid who is top 15% was over prepped.

Ok so answer me this: they have often said IEP/504 status was taken into consideration. As a parent with a child with one of these, I never got an answer as to whether this allowed iep/504 students into the pool with lower scores, or whether there was a certain number of seats set aside for these students or what impact positive or negative this piece was assigned. Completely smoke and mirrors.

I think a PP is calling CCES a ghetto school

I wonder how someone got into the GT program with an 85% at CCES. Hmmmm.
