How difficult is it to transfer elementary schools?

Anonymous
I don't like the elementary school we are zoned for in Alexandria (Fairfax County). Would prefer not to move as it is very convenient to work. We do not want to give up our short commutes. There are a few elementary schools right next to us that are good.

Do we have no choice but to go private? How hard is it to transfer to a neighboring elementary school?

The other school has to be below capacity, and you have to establish a child-care hardship.

Or you could join the real world, where we all have to sacrifice other priorities to live in good school districts.

I would rather pay for private school than have a long commute.

So, there you go.

find a home day care provider in one of the zoned good schols

Very difficult. Boundaries and laws are there for a reason. Our county just hired another investigator to check residency claims. It is a crime-fraud- to lie about where your child resides.

Not the OP but the cushy commute means more time with the children and not as many hours in after school daycare.

I think you also have to establish that you can't find daycare in your zone, or have some other unusual reason.

Pay for private for K-2 and hope that your kids are found AAP Center eligible so they can switch schools for 3rd - 8th grade. Then pay for private high school.

If there are public elementary schools near you that you consider good, presumably they'd offer a convenient commute to work as well. Can you move into one of those districts? Yeah, that would be a hassle, but life is full of inconveniences.

In general, it's much easy to transfer between high schools than elementary schools.

Maybe you don't have to, but it's in the instructions from FCPS:

Parents or guardians must attach the Affidavit for Student
Transfer Child Care Requests http://www.fcps.edu/dss/osp/StudentRegistration/studenttransfer/affidavit.pdf verifying the facts of the request and indicating the attempts the family has made to
procure child care within the community of residence. The child care provider must be located within the
requested school boundaries. Full-time, before and/or after school child care is needed for student transfer
consideration. For help in locating child care visit the Fairfax County Office for Children, Child Care Central,
at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ofc/.

do any of the schools you are interested in offer language immersion programs? you could apply to that program, it is a lottery and I don't think there are many spots for out of boundary kids, but it is a possibility.

Apply for language immersion if you can provide transportation.
