| What schools would you all recommend for a kid with pretty severe merld? |
| I assume you are looking for private schools? Can you give more information? How old is your child? Can you give examples that illustrate the severity? What feedback has the current teacher given?I have found some parents describe as severe what many might consider moderate, but some describe things as mild that have a huge impact on the child's ability to learn in an academic setting. Therefore, without more detail, it is hard to say X school might be a great fit. |
How old is your DC? And what school district is your home? |
| Child will be six in this summer. Considering private, as well is if public can work for this disability. |
| I have a kindergartener with MERLD and apraxia of speech. We're in FCPS and have been very happy with the services and support we receive. We do use a consultant for the IEPs but I can't imagine receiving comparable, quality services and supports except at a school specifically designed for kids with challenges. The money we save by staying in public schools enables us to hire the consultant and maintain therapies. BTW - our school is not quite a Title 1 school but almost. It's test scores are the best but all our kids are thriving there. |

Re:public school..some areas have really good supports. What county are you i and what town?
Have you had any evaluations? If so, how far behind are receptive and expressive. Some schools will not accomodate a child who is over a year behind in language and other skills while others will. I assume the child's only issues are language (no behavior issues?) Are there attention issues? Are there social pragmatic issues? Some private schools worth checking out are Katherine Thomas, Maddux and Diener, but I have no idea if these are the schools for your child. I just know they work well with language issues and student teacher ratio is good. All three I think state they have students with expressive and receptive delays. For some reason I think of Lab as particularly good for dyslexia since we have known 2 families who thought it really helped their dyslexic child. My guess is given their "we don't work with PDD" bend they won't work with language pragmatic issues even if your child does not have a PDD diagnosis, but I have no idea. |
