I'd like to introduce DS to fish. I don't eat it myself, so I know little about preparing it. Are there any easy non fishy tasting recipes out there? preferably spicy

I buy a bag of frozen tilapia at Safeway. Defrost the filets the night before. Coat with fine corn meal, salt, pepper mix and fry in skillet with a little canola oil.
Tilapia is a thin white filet that's not fishy tasting and cooks in a few minutes. |

We love this fish taco recipe. The only change we make is with the dressing. We use maybe a teaspoon of adobo sauce that comes with chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (in a can in the hispanic section of the grocery store). We use the frozen fish fillets. We're not a fan of tilapia, we like the halibut or barramundi from Giant.

I think PP is right that tilapia is mild and easy to cook. But I think most of it is from fish farms in China and I've heard some scary things about how those farms impact the environment. And the quality of the food could be compromised as well.
Here is a slightly spicy salmon recipe I love. Sort of a lot of trouble if you're not going to be enjoying it, but... Mix together a couple tablespoons of Thai red curry paste with a couple tablespoons of butter. Spread some of that on one side of a smallish piece of salmon (wild caught, Pacific.) Using a large plate half-filled with water, dunk a spring roll wrapper to hydrate it. Once softened, wrap the salmon in the rice paper. Saute in sesame oil, trying to keep the paper somewhat intact. Finish in the oven for a couple minutes. Also, my kids live smoked herring. Sometimes called kippers. Comes in a flat can, sort of like anchovies. Addictive. Trader Joes. Put in on a cracker. |
| My picky DS loves salmon in any form. I get pre seasoned wild salmon at Costco and just pop it in the oven. You can also make salmon cakes with canned salmon. |

I agree on the concerns with tilapia. I don't eat it because of the fact it's a "garbage eater" (will eat whatever it's fed), so there can be concerns about what its flesh is tainted with if it comes from questionable sources.
I also think salmon is a great choice! 10 month old DD loves salmon. I don't make it too spicy for her, yet, though -- I usually just roast it and dice it up with some veggies, spiced with dill or maybe lemon and pepper. That said, this recipe is DELISH and you can spice it up as much as you want (add in chilis to the bell pepper). http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/salmon_fish_stew_brazilian_style/ Finally, this is the FISHIEST of fish, but mackerel goes over REALLY well with kids, in my experience. It's also a fav with DD, and my nephews (2 and 8 months). I get the tinned stuff, which is canned in oil so there's plenty of healthy fats for growing kids. The sodium in the brand I buy is not high, either (make sure you check if you want to try this). |
| I'm a huge fan of snapper. It's pretty meaty. |

I use halibut, not cod, but this is an easy one dish meal:

I buy Salmon, Tilapia and Catfish filet from Costco.
An easy recipe that I came up with for Salmon that my kids love is to marinate (15 min) the fish with a little plain nonfat yogurt, olive oil, Costo bought pesto and sea salt. I broil the marinated fish in toaster oven. This is extremely easy. I cook catfish bake or broil catfish marinated with curry powder, turmeric, ginger & garlic paste, lemon, olive oil and sea salt. And for tilapia, I bake or broil marinated with yogurt, coariander paste, fresh mustard paste, sea salt and olive oil. All the marinade are interchangable. In fact, you can be very creative with new spices. These fish takes very little time to cook and kids love. Try these and let me know if you liked any. |
| I cook tons of fish but never mackerel - PP, how do you cook/prepare it? |
| My 2 yr old loves grilled in a pan Tilapia. |

I make salmon in a sweet chili sauce:
Let salmon get to room temp (important) Preheat oven to low broil Mix together 1/8 cup sweet chili sauce (franks makes a good one), 1/8 cup soy sauce, grate some ginger Spoon over salmon in a foil lined pan Broil until done. 9-11 minutes is my preference. |
