Irish soda bread

Do any bakeries or markets around here make their own? (I'm not looking for the kind in the plastic bag that's shipped in.)

I think Spring Mill does-- might call them to confirm.

I'm interested, too. We're the Irish family slated to bring in soda bread for 30 first graders. Since I've never had soda bread, do you add anything to serve (like butter or icing)? Thanks.

it is served with butter. some have caraway seeds. some are made with buttermilk. the one i make has sour cream. i used low-fat (don't use fat free).

3 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
pinch salt
16 oz (1 pint) sour cream
1 cup raisins (OK that might be a lot - but 1/2 one of those big boxes)
2 tsp baking powder
1/5 tsp baking soda

Combine all ingredients in a bowl & mix well. The dough is extraordinarily sticky - best to use your hands. A spoon just won't cut it.

Put it all in a buttered loaf pan, in a preheated 325 degree oven. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes. Yum!

Whole Foods has good Irish soda bread. Also, Great Harvest Bread Co. in Rockville sells it on Mondays and Fridays during March.
