| Are there any families out there who are in the DC area for a tour and have successfully placed their children in any private schools? Will a school accept a student (pk, k, 1st) knowing that the family would ony be attending for one or two academic years? if so, and if you have done so, how did you manage the application process from overseas and finally...if your child was once enrolled at a private school during your DC tour was your child invited to return later in the future DC tours or would you have to apply all over again? TIA |

We will be moving in August and applied to K at WIS and got a place. We will be there 2 to 4 years, I think we did mention it to them. In any case, we did not hide it purposefully.
Application process ... my husband went on a tour when he waas in DC for business in December. We filled in application form and paid 60 USD in January. I went to DC for 4 days in January to visit some schools, including WIS. We finalised the process by doing the IQ test, and sending a report from my son's current school. I did not want my son to go DC to visit a school he may not end up going to, so instead of the playdate that they are requested to do, we filmed him at home doing several (mundaine) things and posted the videos on youtube and e-mailed the links to the school. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions or if I can help. I know a bit how you feel ... |
| I think all schools like familie who have international experience. |
| 11:48, thank you so much and congrats on your acceptance. I never imagined we would be interested in orivate as an option because we own a house in Arlington but after being overseas with a DC enrolled in a private pre k with an IB PYP program I am not sure I want my kids enrolled in a school that only pushes for SOLs at the expense of creativity...I have no idea if our kids will be a good match for any private schools but it is reassuring that we could try to appky from overseas. Did you rely on FLO at all or is that a joke? Thanks again and good luck with yoyr DC tour! |

11:48 here
What is FLO? |
| DeChantal in Bethesda has several embassy families (mainly French) and are very welcoming. Some have been in the school several years and some ony a year or two. |

Here is link to the IB PYP overview.

| Did you check out Flint Hill School in Fairfax? Believe they have a significant student population from overseas and some for just a few years. |
| The British School of Washington has a lot of foreign service and other international families. We have been extremely happy with our experience there over the past couple of years. DC has been in the youngest classes, but others close to us have graduated from the school after transferring there in the middle/high school years (using U.S. terminology). We appreciate the international diversity. The school is used to dealing with families that are only in the U.S. for a period of time. |
| Does State pay for private while you are DC? If not, how can you afford it on a State Dept salary? |
Let's review, GS-14 or 15's can make up to $155k/yr. x2 that's 250-300K/yr. Enough to afford private if you want to. Additionally, while overseas our foreign service and military families have multiple benefits that can allow them to save additional money. |

19:07 again. I just realized that my post probably came off as bitchy. I didn't really mean to, but on top of the thread about the OP's husband being offered an SES position it just feels like a day where the rich Biglaw SAHMs are looking down on those poor old civil servants.
Maybe that's not the case, but two different posts about how shocking it is that federal employees make so little or could possibly afford something as exclusive as private school have just rubbed me the wrong way. In any event, hope I answered the PPs question regarding the bank accounts of foreign service officers and their families. |
Too large of a price to pay to live somewhere that you may not like. C'mon, people have issues with Montgomery Co. vs. Fairfax Co. Can you imagine getting stuck in some butt h*** of a place. You cannot pay me enough. |
| Most FS families are not dual, they are on one State salary. And it takes them a long time to get to that level. Appreciate their service though, they give up a lot to serve our country in some rough places for not enough pay. |
Arlington public schools are amazing. I'm so impressed with the creativity our teachers use to teach my kids despite the SOL nonsense. Waaaay better than some of the craptastic international and DoDDs schools I went to as a Foreign Service kid! (The worst was the missionary school, oh man oh man). At such a young age, I would at least try the publics and save your money to send your kid to private college. Ah, but it was a great way to grow up; I loved every post! |
