Advice on cooking with fennel?

Anonymous
I have a recipe that calls for a chopped fennel bulb. Can I get this at Giant or should I try Trader Joe's or Whole Fields?

Also, do I just chop it finely like I would a diced onion? TIA

You should be able to get fennel at Giant or anywhere.

Yep just chop like an onion or however the recipe suggests.

Yes, you can get it anywhere (and I find the fennel at Giant is usually better than that at WF). often labeled in the store as Anise.

This video is short and shows how to get rid of fronds and root:

If it's a recipe like a stew, I would cut them into wedges kind of like carrot sticks. If it's for a salad, I would try using a mandoline for really thin pieces.

I really like fennel, but my family doesn't and I wish I knew some recipes or techniques that I could use to get them better acquainted with fennel.

Try a fennel gratin.

I always run it through the food processor on the ultra-thin slicing blade.

If your recipe leaves you leftover fennel bulb, you can add some to a cold lentil salad and it's AWESOME.
