Let’s hope that Warnock wins. |
The Senate can vote to change it's rules including committee assignments. The democrats have the tie breaker. If McConnell was in the same position that Schumer is now, there would be a republican majorities on the judiciary committee. |
No. Approval only needs a majority. Changing rules including changing committee composition, requires a 2/3 majority vote. They cannot change the composition matching party demographics without 2/3 majority which they are nowhere close to getting. Fortunately, it looks like Warnock has the advantage and is more likely to win than Walker (not a lock, but definitely leaning in Warnock's favor). |
The Senate was 50-50 to start George W Bush's term, and they had similar split committees. |
They changed the rules eliminating filibusters on cabinet nominees and lower court judges under Harry Reid with a majority vote. They changed the rules on filibusters of Supreme Court judges under McConnell with a majority vote. They threatened to change the filibuster rules on legislation with just a majority vote, except Schumer couldn't get the majority. |
Today's podcast on the Daily is a must listen. It shows the years long effort to infiltrate the SCOTUS by conservative donors/activists. Regardless of whether you believe Rev. Schenk and the leaked opinions (and I do - he has little to motivate him to lie here), the overall picture painted is uncontroverted. SCOTUS is not impartial. They are influenced like any other politician. The word used was "permeable." And it was grotesque and unseemly, esp for people who claim to be impartial arbiters of justice. |
“A second Indiana judge on Friday blocked the state from enforcing its law banning most abortions after Jewish, Muslim and other non-Christian women challenged it in a lawsuit.
Marion County Superior Court Judge Heather Welch issued a preliminary injunction against the Republican-backed law, which prohibits abortions with limited exceptions for rape, incest, lethal fetal abnormalities or a serious health risk to the mother. The plaintiffs have argued that the measure infringes on religious freedom protected by another state law.” That state law is a RFRA signed by Mike Pence 😀 https://www.reuters.com/legal/judge-blocks-indiana-abortion-ban-religious-freedom-grounds-2022-12-03/ |
10000000% the "religious freedom" argument needs to be used in this way. Across the board. |
Almost as if “separation of church & state” leads to more rational policy outcomes, more freedom, and more stability. Who could have ever predicted this? |
If MAGA think abortion is going away they aren’t paying attention. 1 million more Gen Z will be voting in 2024 and having rights to their body is top three issue. |
