Am I nuts or is DH?

Anonymous
Okay, I need some clarity here because either DH is crazy or I am, and I'm pretty sure it's not me. And yes, I realize that in the grand scheme of things this is a silly little argument... but I still think he's nuts! Sorry if this post gets a little wordy, but I've gotta know what the DCUM crowd thinks, so please bear with me.

I baked a batch of muffins the other day, and while hanging out and watching TV tonight, DH and I decided to have one this evening. He went to the kitchen to get them and to pop them in the microwave for a few seconds. I asked him to put mine on a plate because they are super crumbly and I didn't want to get crumbs all over the sofa, which DH doesn't care about so he just uses a paper towel. When he handed me the plate with the muffin, I noticed that the plate was really dirty. It turned out that he grabbed a dirty plate from the dishwasher. I figured that it was an accident so I got up and got a clean plate. And then he got offended! He said that by getting a clean plate I was basically accusing him of not being able to do anything right! I asked him if he was generally okay with eating off of dirty dishes, and he told me that he doesn't see anything wrong with it, especially because I rinse the dishes before loading them into the dishwasher. (Note that he knows that I don't pre-wash them with soap, just rinse them to get big food particles off.) I often use plates to prepare raw chicken, burgers, etc., and he has no way of knowing what the dirty dish was used for. But still, he says that it is perfectly okay to eat off of dirty dishes.

To top it off, he then accused me of being a "mild germaphobe." I'm pretty sure that our messy bathroom discounts that theory, but I asked him if he could give me some examples because no one has ever accused me of being a germaphobe before. He said that besides not wanting to eat from unwashed dishes, I also made us keep two kitchen sponges. One is just our regular sponge to wipe crumbs and spills off the counter, or when we hand-wash dishes, and the other is used when we clean the kitchen with chemical cleaning products (bleached-based, comet, 409, etc.). I thought it was common-sense not to use one sponge for these two different types of tasks. I mean, along with not eating off of a dirty plate, I don't really want to eat off of a plate that was wiped down with a sponge that still has 409 or bleach soaked in, and was previously used to wipe the floor under the stove or something. He said that those were the only two examples of my "germaphobia" that he had. So does this make me a germaphobe? Am I a DCUM princess? If I'm wrong, I want to know it, and I'll ungrudgingly apologize to DH.

P.S. We generally have a great relationship, so I wouldn't say this is a symptom of a larger problem (can you tell that I read DCUM a lot?). Also, he thinks I'm pretty awesome for making delicious baked goods!

He is misinformed. I hope he is not just saying this stuff because he knows it will annoy you....

He is gross..sorry..and why would it be so bad to grab a clean dish from the cabinet. Hope he at leat washes his clothes. Oh FYI..dishes that are sitting in the dishwasher before it runs..smell..yuckkkkkk

Men are weird that way. Their definition of "clean" is oftentimes not. Def on your side, OP.

He's gross and your sponge thing is weird.

I keep one for counter cleaning (it never touches the floor though) and another one for dishes only.

I'd never wash dishes with a sponge I used to wipe the counter... YUCK!

I've been known to keep a plate on the counter that had something that wasn't messy, like a bagel, on it, and then grab it later to reuse it. But I wouldn't put something in the dishwasher and then take it out to reuse it. That seems kinda gross.

As for the sponge thing... well, a true germaphobe would use paper towels. Sponges are notorious for being bacteria-laden.

I don't even use sponges, except for a dobie for handwashing dishes. It's paper towels for cleaning the counter and most other surfaces. Microfiber cloth for deep cleaning and then immediately into the wash.

I would love it if you are the same couple who has arguments over one or two bath rugs and who should drive the kids home after a visit to granny's house when BIL lives in between granny and DH. Make it a reality show please.

OP here. Sadly I am none of those other posters. My life is just not that exciting!

The dirty plate is gross, but it sounds like he likes pushing your buttons on the cleanliness thing which leads me to assume you are a bit nutty about it. I could see my germaphobe dh writing something similar about me.

It sounds like he is PMSing

OP here again. I do this too! Pretty sure a germaphobe wouldn't do this. Of course, I first have to wash the plate three times, then jump three times, then spin in three counterclockwise circles, but that's pretty normal, isn't it?

You are perfectly normal and so is he.

He's gross.
