Fairfax or loudon shools

We are about to move to NOVA, but are confused between Fairfax or Loudon county.Our 1st priority is good schooling? So can you share your thoughts about Loudon cunty/airfax county schools ? Which has better schools and also how comparable are Loudon county GT programs to those in fairfax

Most of Loudoun's schools are upper-middle achieving, as opposed to Fairfax, which has a number of very high achieving, and a number of lower-achieving. The high schools in Loudoun at least are smaller.

I'd be more concerned about commute time and housing prices if I were you.

The loudon GT program does not even begin to compare to the full time GT program that fairfax county has. In Loudon, the kids get pulled out of class for 1 day a week and end up having to miss and make up what's going on in the regular class. In Fairfax, the kids are placed in a classroom with only other GT kids all day everyday from grade 3-6, and all instruction is accelerated and enriched.

I'm not sure it's a factor to base your housing choice on, though, unless you're pretty sure that your kid will be in that top 2% and need full time acceleration.

That's not really a fair comparison, really. Fairfax has a number of very high-achieving schools, quite a few upper-middle achieving schools, and a fair number of lower-achieving schools. Loudoun has many upper-middle achieving schools and a few lower-achieving schools. The prior post makes it sound like there's nothing in the solid middle in Fairfax, when there is plenty. And that's just based on school averages. Both are pretty good systems. I'd be more concerned about commute time and housing prices if I were you.

Looking ahead, if you live in Loudoun, you have the opportunity to apply to both the Academy of Science and TJHSST, whereas in Fairfax you can only attend TJ.

If your commute is to a job in Loudoun, it makes sense to buy in Loudoun. I agree with PP about commute time being a big factor.

Let's face it--- the kids might not even be GT. I hear this cr*p all of the time from ppl that think their kids are geniuses.
