Private & Independent Schools

| Sure. I've been working out with a personal trainer, I've gone blonde, and on my last trip to New York, I boosted a Chanel suit. Bring it on! |
We're sitting out this round. No more admissions for us (except for sibs) for a looong time!

| We're applying for K this fall. I promised myself I wouldn't read DCUM from Sept - March (and get my panties all in a bunch). DH has bet me $100 that I can't hold out until those skinny or fat (hopefully) envelopes come. |
I want in on that bet. No way you make it. |
| I have a question for experienced private school admission families. I am applying my son to one or two private pre-k programs for next fall. Where we live (not DC), they do require a school visit/playdate for 2 hrs or so. If my son goes in Oct or Nov, he will have only been in his 3 yr old preschool program for 2 months. Do the AD at these schools expect every kid to just go willingly into a playdate w/ people and other kids they don't know? The schools also require his preschool teacher to fill out a form about him. It is due in early Dec. He will only have been attending preschool for 3 months by that time, 2 mornings a week. Are they really supposed to know all about my son after he has only been in class say 15 times? |
Three seems very young to be going on these visits. If I am not mistaken, my son did not visit the school to which he eventually went to Pre-K (Beauvoir) until January or February, so he was four. I think you start the application process in October or November, but your child will not be visiting until many months later. That's good on both fronts in your case, giving your child more exposure to his current preschool teacher, and making him more comfortable with separation. |
| Sorry, I realized that you did say that the teacher recommendation form was due in early December. This must have changed since we applied. All of our application papers (including recommendations) were not due until January. In any event, make sure the current pre-school teacher knows you are going to be applying out and that you will need to have a recommendation for your child for the application process. This at least gives them a heads up. |
| Most of the playdates are with other admissions students - usually in January. They just want to see how your child separates, and if they are social kids with decent learning capabilities. All the other kids will be in the same boat. At our school, the parents take them in the room, get them settled and then leave. |
| To the OP- Really, was it necessary to start in on this so early? |
| Shouldn't this be in the farce thread? |
| OP here. The schools we are considering have an application deadline in Jan w/ the school visits and teacher recs due in Dec (according to their website). And if you are applying for pre-k (4 yr olds), you have to start the process the year before they start when they are 3. I think it is very young for all of this but the public schools where we are are borderline dangerous so they aren't an option. The only other choices are parochial schools which we will look into also. |
The summer is practically over. Educational consultants to hire. Tests to take. Connections to call in. If you are reading this, and are SERIOUSLY thinking about entering the private school sweepstakes, and haven't at least started the process, you're already one step behind most others. |
| It is sad to say but you can say that again! |
|
You're joking, right?
You people are actually "ruining" your summer over this? |
