Is GDS too woke?

Anonymous
We have kids amongst three schools. Our oldest started at GDS early on and we assumed we’d put all three in. But after seeing things first hand we did not, not even later.

gDS is the only one we’ve been disappointed in academically and with its increasing social/political movement angle for everything (lower, middle). Also with its disorganization. It could be run a lot more professionally than it is. The whole place feels like an experiment.

They don’t know- nor ever solicit anonymous or honest feedback- how many people are holding their noses at it all hoping the real academics come though and their kids don’t get screwed up.

We picked it due to location and academic reputation. Now we question the latter and have concerns on mission obsession.

and yet you still pay the money to send your kid there . . . how weak-minded are you?

It’s a great school and kids love it. Wokeness only bothers the parents, it seems.

It bothers the parents because on one level they know their kids are being brainwashed. It'll serve them well in any SLAC, of course, where it'll be more of the same.

if that's what they think and they keep their kids in the school, then they only have themselves to blame.

What is their alternative?

If they sincerely believe that their kids are being brainwashed they should absolutely and it would be an imperative that they change schools.

Right. Which schools?

Honestly, Sidwell. It's liberal too in a lot of ways, of course, but it has a strong Quaker ethos that "all voices are heard." Believe it or not, this also means the more-than-a-few conservative voices that are there.

Any one of the other private schools, public school or homeschool. If you’re sending your kid to GDS you have money. If you’re too dumb or lazy to find an alternative why should anyone have any sympathy for you? If you care that much about this why aren’t you doing the research?

So your other two kids went to schools you judged superior but you kept your first kid at GDS?

Your bizarre focus on me is making you miss the point. The vast majority of the schools are somewhere along the Woke continuum. I have done the research and I am asking because it is very difficult to find a school that is primarily focused on academic excellence. I’m just wondering if anyone else has come up with better alternatives or knows about a school I may have missed.

Not true. Conservative voices are quashed and/or mocked at Sidwell too

Same here. It has not been as advertised. What started out objective and factual now is not.

I agree it has gone down a slippery, woke slope. I wouldn't mind it as much if the academics hadn't slid along the way. But they have.

Stop being so paranoid. It’s an anonymous forum no one can tell who is posting what.

If the vast majority of schools are as you say, maybe you’re the outlier. Homeschool your kid.

So we can’t mock conservatives? That’s off limits?

Am I an outlier? Am I the only one who wants the priority of my kids’ school to be academic excellence?

The problem is not whether GDS is “woke”, the problem is that GDS is smug/annoying. I have no problem with the ideology that they promote. The attitude of superiority on the other hand is tiresome.

Probably for the same reasons that most other people do.

Teaching "woke" is easier. Lazy teachers are the first to grab on.
