Or they're just ashamed because they come from a dump where everyone has bad breath because of meth mouth. Oh well. |
NYC, never heard of it. I barely know NYC. I think I got coffee there once. I'm from Palm Beach, always have had a place in Palm Beach. I vote there. I vote there bigly. |
I'm impressed by people who work their way out of impoverished rural areas. Not so impressed by people who never left the second tier city they grew up in and develop a chip on their shoulder because they take pride in well, nothing. |
Maybe because you're from that place. And if you are proud, good for you. It's better than the people who lie and try to hide the reality of the dumps they crawled out of, which is a lot of people on here. |

This thread is 15 pages long and keeps going! And it's obvious there's a lot of insecure people from Bumf--k, USA, on DCUM.

Yeah, I grew up in the hopeless ghetto of Alpine, NJ. So what's wrong with "crawling out of a dump"? You seem to be really upset that "outsiders" have the audacity to move. This might be why people don't want to tell you where they're from. |
No way. It takes two seconds to say, "I'm from Ohio but have been in DC 20 years." |
Never heard of it. Maybe that's why don't want to tell people? Anyway... pretty sad behavior. |
I tell people where I'm from. You keep making bizarre assumptions. So what's wrong with "crawling out of a dump"? You seem to be really upset that "outsiders" have the audacity to move. This might be why people don't want to tell you where they're from.' |

NY state, yes, but it’s usually not sufficiently specific to just say what state you’re from when you’re talking to other Americans. |
|
In my experience it is. The follow up is, "NY state or city?" You, "State originally but moved to NYC burbs and then city proper as a teen, parents are still there." |
It's not obvious at all. "Where are you from?" could mean "Where do you live?" or "Where did you grow up?" If you want to know where someone grew up, ask "Where did you grow up?" It's up to you to be clear in your communication. People aren't mind readers. |
