Weird foods your mom made

It's like a wheat version of polenta.

Here is what my mom did: cook some macaroni. Drain, and add three tablespoons of butter into the pot of macaroni and stir. Spoon it into individual bowls. Add a tablespoon of ketchup into each bowl. Sprinkle some salt on top. Stir. Give a bowl to each kid for lunch.

I do this with tomato paste when we’re out of sauce.

There was this cake my mom made which she called "applesauce cake" but I'm not sure it had apples in it. It was usually served warm, I think there was a boxed cake mix that she'd buy, a spiced cake, and a warm sauce poured over it. Oh it was divine. It was good cold and we'd eat it the leftovers for breakfast, lol. I wish my mom was still around so I could ask her what it was. I think it's roughly something like this: https://www.melskitchencafe.com/apple-dapple-cake-with-warm-vanilla-cream-sauce/

My mom did something really similar, basically the Asian version:

Fresh hot white rice, add big pat of butter, stir and mix with a little bit of soy sauce and sesame oil.
I’ve heard other moms did this with PB but I don’t think I’ve ever tried that.

It's chipped ham sautéed in barbeque sauce and diced onions, served as a sandwich on a hamburger bun with optional relish or bread and butter pickles. SO good, still love to have it whenever we go visit her.

Grandma lives in Pittsburgh with her chipped ham sandwiches, I assume? I hated them growing up, but not as much as I hated ham salad sandwiches.

You got it! And she made homemade ham salad sandwiches, too! She had one of those old fashioned meat grinders that clamped on the table like another PP described up thread.

I misread this as crushed sardines and was about to say this post wins the prize. Tomato soup with crushed saltines is standard.

Mmm, that sounds great!

Why is chipped ham??

It IS great! Chipped ham is sort of like shaved ham, but not exactly. Popularized by Isaly's.

She would make eggplant in a very unappetizing way:

it looked like large green slugs with seeds throughout

I didn’t like eggplant until I was an adult and ate it in Italian dishes.

Our version of "snow cream" was fresh snow mixed with frozen fruit punch concentrate

I never knew it was supposed to be weird ? It was just so yummy. I never even see liverwurst in stores anymore! Sob! Where do you all get it????!!!??? I live in Reston. ( PS The funny thing is we are Irish American, but, my mom’s maternal grandmother was German, so I guess this is where these culinary habits and preference came from?!?)

I get it at whole foods! My kids love it on crusty bread with cornichones. I literally just posted on another thread how my 12 year old is so picky, he won't touch mac n cheese but he will eat the crap out of some pate, go figure

Wegmans has it

My mom would put a slice of deli turkey on top of white bread, and then pour gravy over the top. She also regularly made the above "tuna noodle casserole".

+1. It’s why you get a packet of saltines next to the soup when you buy soup at a diner.

Sardines would be interesting.
