Here is why we should close schools now.

Keep the schools open, but lots of other risk areas we are simply ignoring , why ? Why just take a reflective action that dissproportionately impacts HS students that are low risk? To make ourselves feel like we are " doing something " when really , we continue to have our big CPAC conventions and our political rallies and fund raising dinners with all these people over 50 mingling across state lines ???

That's really weak on execution and planning and is just knee . jerk if you asked me.

**** as for how to intelligently deal with schools, don't just knee jerk close the schools, but rather have kids attend ( they are VERY low risk) , but have those teachers who are 60+ as well as those teachers who smoke or who underlying heath conditions tele teach to their MS/ HS classrooms ( assembled at school)

All outdoor HS Athletic events go on as planned, but no spectators

Its the 21st Century and technology gives us lots of options better than closing schools. A few of them:

First, all cruise ships bookings and permissions to dock at any port should be banned by Federal order ( these are just floating germ farms and most of the cases in US can be traced to Cruise ships )

1) close movie theatres , play sporting events with no fans in attendance and cancel all indoor conventions, business meetings where adults in high risk group mingle ( across state lines) ie CPAC/ AIPAC
2) ban all political rallies
3) close religious services
4) no adult over 60 should be allowed to visit a school and , if they teach there they should tele teach

5) All outdoor HS Athletic events go on as planned, but no spectators

UBER/ Lyft should be banned in every city in the USA . Go back to taxi companies who's employees have sick pay and health insurance ( people without sick pay, who won't be able to earn a living if they don't take riders who are picking up travelers from airports, out of state and riding with them in a close space

I can see you put a lot of thought into this, but it’s just not going to work. Closing all major gatherings except for the largest one in the town that takes place every day is going to negate all other measures. The kids will still be infected and feeling fine and spreading it to their households and thereby the greater community. We also don’t know how kids with asthma and other underlying conditions will fare with the virus. Closing everything is really the only solution. Health and life needs to come above education and commerce right now.

We aren't going to shut America down. There will be no support from the government (state or Federal) to do this because of the fear about what it would do to the economy. The most they will do is give federal employees more flexibility for teleworking, but they'll likely drag their feet on that so as to delay any negative inferences from the government making that decision. It's a calculated call. The only people who will ultimately care, sadly, will be the families of unfortunate 1-2 percent who die. If the mortality rate was closer to 20 percent, maybe you'd see things being shut down.

Why not let those parents who want to keep kids at home and homeschool to do so to keep safe elderly at home from the kids exposure? Why the one size fits all? Why individual can not decide for their family and kids life?

They can and should. Even if the schools threaten the parents who opt to do this, can you imagine the optics? School boards would back down immediately

You can pull your kids out right now and homeschool. Look up the rules for your state online.

Tomorrow, MCPS announces that Friday is the last day of school for March and the following Monday will be a teacher work day for training on online instruction for GS credit courses.

On Friday, all secondary students will get a Chromebook and a WiFi hotspot. And any students on FARMs who receive FARMS will be given WIC-type vouchers for two weeks of food at local grocery stores. If the closure is extended, more vouchers can be mailed. Or an EBT card can be issued (since WIC now uses cards) and more ration money can be transferred to it at two week intervals.

Who exactly is going to pay for that food?

The same funding as feeding them breakfast, lunch, and weekend backpacks now.

This is a situation resulting from national spread. MD cases are here due to travel rules regulated by the central government, therefore central governments should solve crisis in the states resulted from central decisions that contributed to the state situation that a state could not prevent.

I have family in Italy. All these comments about overreaction, just the flu, etc etc are the same ones they were having 3 weeks ago there. The situation has precipitated rapidly. And this despite the excellent healthcare system and general health of Italians (very little obesity, healthy diets, a lot of physical activity).
The time to act here is now. Unfortunately our political leadership is lacking. It will be up to local governments to lead on this.

Won't it die out with the warmer weather right around the corner?

No.

It’s warm in Iran right now.

Several countries with viral spread have warmer climates than we do.

Why do people need to reinvent the wheel instead of learning from other countries’ mistakes or quick action?

Close down schools and initiate large scale telework.

Bunch of deplorables. .

No and it’s not about warmer weather. It has to do with higher humidity. Florida is warm and humid now and there are people dying. We are all vulnerable with no antibodies since this is a result virus. It won’t die out.

For crying outloud, this is the United States of America! The government can not demand the closure of religious services! You are insane.

Unlike SARS, people contracted with Coronavirus don’t show symptoms- no fever or coughing whatsoever for as long as 3 weeks, during which they spread it to the community without knowing. There is just a new positive in Fairfax City. Before this patient was admitted to the hospital on March 5, was he quarantined at home, or did he go shopping, has he been to any parks, the library, any playground? Which people has he visited? Where does his children work? Where have they been to? Does he have grandchildren going to FCPS? Fairfax City or county Health Department should investigate and let us know.

Children and young people do die from coronovirus. Healthcare workers, too. The published death toll from other countries are not always accurate. People die at home and don’t make it to the number because they don’t get admitted to the hospital due to shortness of beds during the early weeks of the outbreak. Many who did still weren’t counted because during those weeks, diagnose was by test kit that were 30-50% accurate and did not count CT scan. People here don’t realize how severe it is. Some think it’s about elderly people, don’t want to close school until there is “sign of community spread” or just for free lunch, and don’t trust masks.

How about Singapore? It works there.

Singapore has a strict quarantine in place and started early containment. These efforts are not a result of the weather.

It'd be ironic if the creationists get wiped out à la Darwin.

See other countries as well. Quick reactions save life!

Please pay attention the detail here:
As one of the three confirmed cases in Montgomery county attended the retirement meeting at the Village at Rockville and many students from both Wootton High and RFMS volunteered at the Village at Rockville after Feb. 28. We are extremely concerned that these individuals are NOT considered at risk of contracting the virus. The incubation period of this virus can be as long as 24 days or longer. Some people who have contracted the virus may not even exhibit any symptom but can still be contagious.

When we see cases up, it would be too late because you never know who carry the virus and it can be spread without any symptoms.

Not just taxi companies. COVID is going to highlight just how screwed up American sick policy can be. Many folks do not get sick leave or they have it in theory but are discouraged to call in sick. One of the worse industries? Restaurants. Another one? Healthcare. I work for a good health care system and can take PTO. But I know of many fellow nurses in the US who get penalized for calling in sick. We shouldn't blame workers for coming in to work sick; we need to start holding the higher ups accountable for their crap policies.
